TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Presented by Wasiya Iram (10801A0541)

CONTENTS Introduction History GPS Architecture Working of GPS Applications Advantages Extent of using GPS Conclusion

INTRODUCTION The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS satellites also called NAVSTAR.NAVSTAR stands for Navigation Satellite Tim - ing and RangingSystem.GPS provides location and time information of targ - eted person in all weather condition a t any where ,24 hours a day.

HISTORY 1969—Defense Navigation Satellite System (DNSS) formed. 1973—NAVSTAR Global Positioning System developed. 1978—first 4 satellites launched. 1993—24th satellite launched; initial operational capability. 1995—full operational capability. May 2000—Military accuracy available to all users.

GPS ARCHITECTURE The GPS Architecture is divided into three segments The Space Segment The Control Segment The User Segment 1.The Space Segment:-This segment specifies satellites orbiting the Earth.

2.The control segment:-It specifies Stations positioned on the Earth’s equator to control the satellites. 3.The user segment :- Anybody that receives and uses the GPS signal.

WORKING OF GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. GPS receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the user's exact location. GPS receiver compares the time at signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time when it was received user's position and display it on the unit's electronic map.

Fig:Working of GPS A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a 2D position (latitude and longitude) and 3D position.

APPLICATIONS In-vehicle Navigation (car, boat, airplane) Geologic Research & Mining Military Navigation and Operations Mapping & Surveying Precision Agriculture Public Health, Public Safety Weather Forcasting Wireless Communications Automobile manufacturers are offering moving-map displays guided by GPS receivers as an option on new vehicles.

ADVANTAGES Easy to navigate GPS works in all weather conditions. 100% coverage on the planet. Easy to integrate into other technologies like Cell phone. Best navigating system in water. Recover stolen car and other electronic devices. Helps in monitoring earthquake , t sunami predictions around the world.

EXTENT OF USING GPS This Pie chart shows usage of Global Positioning System.

COCLUSION Previously this service of GPS was confined only the military and law enforcements agencies , but now this is a extended for civilian.GPS provided good substitute for route mapping in navigation. GPS has truly helped man to advance in more ways than one.It is also going to bring a great revolution by its development. The future will hold a lot more surprises. Automobiles are tested on moving on their own without the assistance of a driver.
