NECK MUSCLE SPASM

Definition :
involuntary contractions of the muscles in your
neck. The muscles get tight, hard, and painful.

Causes :
1-Neck strain or sprain :
due to:
-Sleeping in wrong position.
-Sports injury.
-Poor posture: for example (Text neck)
-Repetitive motions: such as side to side while dancing or swimming .
-Whiplash.
-
-hold the head in unusual position : having along conversation while
cradling a phone between head and shoulder.

Text neck : an increasingly common problem
that develops in anyone who spends hours
looking down at the phone while texting.

2-Overexertion or fatigue.
3-Herniated disc.
4-Facet joint osteoarthritis.
5-Mechanical dysfunction.
6-Peripheral neuropathy.
7-Myofascial pain syndrome.
8-Stress or anxiety.
9-Cervical dystonia.

Symptoms :
Constant or throbbing neck pain.
Twitching.
Cramping.
Headache.
Trouble with vision , dizziness , fatigue.

CervicogenicHeadache :
A secondary headache that occurs because of a physical
or neurologic condition in the neck .
A referred headache.
Due to convergence of sensory nerve fibers originating from
both the trigeminal nerve and the upper spinal nerves into
the trigeminocervicalnucleus .

Characters:
dull ache in the neck and radiates
upward along the back of the head,
almost always affecting just one side.
Pain may also spread to the forehead,
temple, and area around the eyes
and/or ears.

Treatment :
1-medical:
-anti-inflammatory medicine, such as ibuprofen
-muscle relaxant.
-Non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs).
-injection of steroid medicine or an anesthetic into the muscle.

2-Others :
-stretching exercises.
-Massage.
-Ice : every 3 to 4 hours for up to 20 minutes at a time.
-Moist heat : Don’t use heat if you have swelling.
-Physical therapy.
-Stress management.
