INTRODUCTION
•In the middle of the 18

century, Neoclassicism
wasbornoutofrejectionoftheRoccoandlate
Baroquestyles.Romanticismbeganinthesame
erabutitsapproachhadtodowiththemodern
ornewratherthanthetraditional.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
Analyze art elements and principles in the production of work following the
style of Neoclassicism and romantic arts.

Reflect on and derive the mood idea or message emanating from selected

ofEnglightenment .The art style in this period was brought about by the renewed interest in
GreekandRomanclassics.

Neoclassicism Classicism
Thisistherenewedinterestinclassicaland
formsthatinfluencedEuropeanandAmerican
society through idea , politics ,andfine arts
during the 18

and 19
th
century. It also refers to
the art forms created after but inspired by the
ancient times.Thisperiodwasderivedfromthe
Classicalmovement.
This is the period which Greek and Roman
principlesandstyleswerereflectedinsociety.

•Becarefulnottointerchangethetwoterms.
Classicalreferstotheartformsproducedin
antiquity or inspired by it after ward, while
Neoclassicalreferstotheartformsinspired
byancienttimes,butcreatedlater.

NEOCLASSICAL PAINTING
•Neoclassical artists embraced the ideals of order and
moderationinwhichartisticinterpretationsofclassical
Greek and Roman history were restored to realistic
portrayals. Neoclassical painters gave great importance to
the costumes, setting, and details of classical subject-matter
withoutaddingdistractingdetailsbutwithas muchhistorical
accuracyas possible.

NEOCLASSICALSCULPTURES
•The Neoclassical period was one of the great
ages of public sculpture. Artists looked to
Roman styles during the time of Alexander the
Greatforinspirationaswellastomimictheir
style.

ANTONIOCANOVA
Canova was a prolific Italian artist and sculptor
who became famous for his marble sculptures
thatdelicatelyrenderednudeflesh.
He opened the idea for portraying discrete
sexualpleasuresbyusingpure contourswithhis
mythologicalcompositions.

BERTELTHORVALDSEN (1789-
1838) DENMARK
•Thorvaldsenwasthefirstinternationally
acclaimed Danish artist. He executed
sculpturesofmythological andreligious

NEOCLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE
•Neoclassicalarchitecturestylesstartedinthemid-18
th
century.ItturnedawayfromthegrandeurofRococo
style and the Late Baroque. In its purest form,
Neoclassicalarchitecturewasastyle principallyderived
from the architecture of Classical Greece and Rome and
thearchitecturaldesignsoftheItalianarchitectAndrea
Palladio.

TEMPLESTYLE
•Templestyle buildingdesignwasbasedonanancienttemple.
These buildings were uncommon during the Renaissance as
architectsofthatperiodfocusedmainlyonapplyingclassical
elements to churches and modern buildings like palazzos and
villas.
Many temple style buildings feature a peristyle (a
continuouslineofcolumnsaroundabuilding),ararefeatureof
Renaissancearchitecture.

PALLADIANSTYLE
•PalladianbuildingswerebasedonAndreaPalladio’sstyleof
villaconstruction.Someofthebuildingsfeatureabalustrade
whichisarailingwithverticalsupportsalongtheedgeofthe
roof.Thereareverticalsupportswithinabalustradeknown
as“balusters”or“spindles”.Itisalsoaclassicalmethodof
crowningabuildingthathasaflatorlowlyingroof.Oneof

ROMANTICISM,1800-1810
•RomanticismwasamovementinwhichtheartistsofNeoclassical
periodsoughttobreaknewgroundintheexpressionofemotion,
both subtle and stormy. It embraced a number of distinctive
themes such as longing for history, supernatural elements, social
injusticesandnature.

•GothicRevival,alsoreferredtoasVictorianGothicorNeo-gothic,isanarchitecture
movementthatbeganinthelate1740sinEngland.
•ManyofNeogothicbuildingsfeaturecastellationinwhichthewallsandtowersare
crenellatedinimitationsofmedievalcastle.Indeed,heavilycastellatedNeogothic
buildingshavebeenoftenreferredtoas“castles”,eventhoughtheyneverservedas a
defensive structure. Among them was Strawberry Hill (demolished and restored ), the
mostfamousworkofthe decorativephaseoftheGothicRevival.

through various major artworks such as paintings, sculptures and architectural
structures. Some of the well-known contributing artists express their skills and ideas
intheirownrespectivefieldofspecialization

FELIX RESURRECTION
HIDALGO Y PADILLA
(1855-1913)
Felix Hidalgo was one of the great Filipino
painters of the late 19
th
century who was
significant in the Philippine history for inspiring
members of the Philippine reform movement.
The painting portrays two scantily clothed
Christian female slaves being mocked by a
group of boorish Roman male onlookers.

JUAN LUNA Y NOVICIO
(1857 –1899)
Juan Luna was a painter and sculptor, who became
one of the first recognized Philippine artists. He was
also a political activist of theanPhilippine
Revolution during the late 19
th
century.
One of his famous artwork was the spollarium. A
latinword referring to the basement of the Roman
Colosseum wherein the fallen and dying
Gladiators were dumped and devoid of their worldy
possessions.

(1892 –1972)
Amorsolo was a National Artist in painting. He was
a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine
landscapes, and he was popularly known for his
craftsmanship and mastery of the use of light.

Tolentino is a Filipino sculptor who was named
