Introduction Spontaneous breathing is defined as movement of air into and out of the lungs as a result of work done by an individual’s respiratory muscles. Oxygen is a drug and should be prescribed with a target saturation range. The air that we breathe contain approximately 21% oxygen.
The emergency assessment includes 4 phases in sequence Quick Look ("BBB": Behavior - Breathing - Body color) Primary evaluation ABCDE Secondary evaluation with a specific medical history and physical examination Tertiary evaluation with laboratory tests, imaging and complementary examinations
introduction Newborn infants who are born at term, have had clear amniotic fluid, and are breathing or crying and have good tone must be dried and kept warm but do not require resuscitation and they should be assisted under infant warmer lamp
Neonatal Resuscitation Neonatal Resuscitation is intervention after a baby is born to help it breathe and to help its heart beat. Before a baby is born, the placenta provides oxygen and nutrition to the blood and removes carbon dioxide. After a baby is born, the lungs provide oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide.
Goals of resuscitation Minimizing immediate heat loss. Establishing normal respiration and lung expansion. Increasing saturation Supporting adequate cardiac output.
WHO Guidelines Be prepared for every birth by having skill to resuscitate and by knowing the institutions policy on resuscitation. Review the risk factors for birth asphyxia. Clearly decide on the responsibilities of each health care provider during resuscitation. Remember that the mother is also at risk of complications
Preparation of Equipment Ensure that radiant warmer on ,warm towel available, Turn on oxygen source, Test the anesthesia Ambo bag for pop off control & adequate flow. Laryngoscope light and an appropriate blade. Appropriate ET tube Emergency drugs.
