Introduction The poisons which act Primarily on nervous system are called neurotic poisons. The chief signs and symptoms in general are usually headache , drowsiness, giddiness, delirium, stupor, coma and sometimes convulsions or paralysis, though individual poisons may have characteristic effects. digitalis toxicity 3
Types of Neurotic poisons Mainly divided into Cerebral Spinal Peripheral digitalis toxicity 4
1) Cerebral poisons These poisons acting on cerebrum Types of cerebral poisons: Somniferous poisons : which causes sleep and it includes opoids . Inebriant : a liquor or brew containing alcohol as the active agent and it includes alcohols, anaesthetics , sedatives agrochemicals etc Deliriant : serious disturbance in mental abilities that results in confused thinking and reduced awareness of the environment and it includes Datura, belladonna cannabis indica , hyoscyamus . digitalis toxicity 5
2) Spinal poisons These poisons act on spinal cord. It includes Nux Vomica (Strychnine) and its alkaloids, Gelsemium digitalis toxicity 6
3) Peripheral poisons These poisons acts on peripheral nerves It includes curare, conium digitalis toxicity 7
