Compare a ballpen and a tumbler in terms of their size. Which is smaller?
Identify the highest place value and the corresponding digit in the highest place value of a given number.
We will compare numbers up to 1,000,000 using >, <, and =.
Unlocking Content Area Vocabulary: Comparing numbers determines if a number is less than, greater than, or equal to another based on their values. In math, the symbols used to compare numbers are < for less than, > for greater than, and = for equal.
Who among you loves fruits? • What is your favorite fruit and why? • What health benefits can we gain from eating fruits? Fruits are very nutritious and they are good for our health. Our bodies need the nutrients they provide to stay strong and on their given weight.

W hich fruit is heavier between ?
W hich fruit is heavier between ?
When we compare different objects, we can compare them based on their attributes or characteristics like weight, texture, size, color, taste (in the case of food), price, etc. In our activity, we compared the weight of each fruit in grams. Since we used the same unit (grams), we could compare the numbers based on their value. When we compare numbers, we determine if a number is less than, greater than, or equal to another based on their values.
Write the numbers in the Place Value chart below. Then, compare them using the symbols <, >, =. 1.245,202 _________ 254,291 Since the given numbers have the same number of digits and their highest place is a hundred thousands place, we compare their digits from the left most part.
2.115,936 _________ 82,776 The given numbers do not have the same number of digits. In 115 936, the highest place value is a hundred thousands place while in 82,776 the highest place value is ten thousands place. Hence, 115,936 is greater than (>) 82,776.
3.1,000,000 _________ 812,645 Let’s have another example. The numbers are 1,000,000 and 812,645. Compare the numbers.
4.78,934 _________ 78,934 What have you noticed in the given numbers? Do they have the same number of digits? What is their highest place value?
5.772,025 _________ 772,205 Let’s compare the two given numbers. What symbol are we going to use?
Compare the following. Write which number is greater. 1. 34,567 or 43,456 ________ 2. 89,786 or 89,876 ________ 3. 56,908 or 56,097 ________ 4. 98,435 or 79,567 ________ 5. 45,678 or 90,567 ________

Thirty-four thousand three hundred eighty-five __________ 34,354 4. 23,768 _______ Twenty-three thousand seven hundred eighty-six 5. Seven thousand five ______ 7,000 + 00 + 0 + 5
How do we compare numbers? What symbols do we use?
To compare numbers, compare the digits in the highest place value. If they are equal, go to the next place value. If they are not, determine the number which is greater or lesser. We use the symbol < for “is less than”, > for “is greater than”, and = for “is equal to”.
Assessment Compare the following objects using the symbols <, >, or =.

Rounding numbers involves finding the closest whole number to the actual number. It approximates the original value. Round up when the digit to the right of the rounding digit is 5-9, we add 1 to the rounding digit. Round dow n when the digit to the right of the rounding digit is 0-4, we retain the rounding digit.
Read and analyze the given word problem. Sarah is a real estate agent. She recently sold a single detached house for ₱760,000.00. To simplify her calculations for reporting purposes, Sarah wants to round off the selling price to the nearest hundred thousands .
To round off the selling price to the nearest hundred thousand, let us see the number line. Since 760,000 is closer to 800,000. Therefore, 760,000 is rounded to 800,000.
To round off numbers we can use the following steps. 1. Identify the digit in the rounding place. This is called the rounding digit. 760,000
2. Identify the digit to the right of the rounding place. 2.1 If the digit to the right of the rounding place is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), round the number down by leaving the rounding digit the same. Then, change all digits to 760,000 the right of the rounding digit to zero. (Round down)
2.2 If the digit to the right of the rounding place is 5 or greater than 5 (6, 7, 8 or 9), round the number up by adding one to the rounding digit. Then, change all digits to the right of the rounding digit to zero. (Round up).
B. Rounding off on word problems. Read and understand the problem. 1. A garment factory produced 387,479 rags to be delivered to one of the famous malls in the country. What is 387,479 if it is rounded off to the nearest hundred thousand?
