Interacting with a Nobel Laureate is a rare and
enlightening experience—one that leaves a
lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough
to engage in such a dialogue.
My recent interaction with Sir Richard J.
Roberts, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or
Medicine in 1993, was nothing short of
transformative. His insights, humility, and
passion for science not only deepened my
understanding of molecular biology but also
inspired me to view scientific inquiry through a
broader lens.

Sir Richard Roberts was awarded the Nobel Prize, alongside
Phillip Sharp, for the discovery of split genes and RNA splicing.
This groundbreaking work fundamentally changed our
understanding of gene structure in eukaryotic cells and paved the
way for significant advances in genetics and biotechnology.
During the session, Sir Richard explained this complex topic with
remarkable simplicity, making it accessible even to those with a
limited background in biology. His ability to communicate
sophisticated science in an engaging and clear manner was one of
the most impressive aspects of our interaction.

Beyond his scientific contributions, what stood out most was Sir
Richard’s advocacy for the use of genetically modified organisms
(GMOs) to combat global hunger. He spoke passionately about how
misinformation and fear have hindered the acceptance of GMOs,
despite their potential to solve some of the most pressing issues in
agriculture and nutrition. He emphasized the need for young
scientists and students to not only pursue scientific excellence but
also to take an active role in public education and science
communication.

What made this interaction particularly meaningful was the
human side of a world-renowned scientist. Sir Richard was
approachable, witty, and deeply interested in the thoughts and
questions of students. His humility reminded us that no matter
how great one’s achievements, there is always room to learn,
grow, and give back to society.
In conclusion, interacting with Sir Richard Roberts was a rare
opportunity that offered both intellectual enrichment and
personal motivation. It reminded me that science is not just
about facts and formulas, but about curiosity, courage, and the
commitment to make the world a better place. His words will
continue to resonate with me as I pursue my own journey in
the world of science and learning.
