NON-DIRECTIVE COUNSELLING GROUP 4 MEMBERS OF THE GROUP: KISAKYE DORCUS OMONY SAMUEL OKUMU MACMOT KIZITO MOSES KYARISIIMA BELLA SERWAMBALA CHARLES

PRESENTATION OUTLINE Introduction Characteristics of nondirective counseling Steps of non directional counseling The advantages and disadvantages of non directional counseling Comparisons between Directional and Non directional counseling

Introduction The chief exponent of this counseling approach is CARL R. ROGER. It is also known as the permissive counselling approach where the counsellor’s role is passive, and the counselee’s role is active. This school of thought is just a reverse of directional counselling It is a counselee- centred or patient- centred counselling approach.

Introduction …….. The counselee makes the final decisions as individuals are thoughts to have the full rights to make the final decisions for the self and solve their problems The counsellor has to accept the counselee's capacity to make adjustment and adapt. The principles of acceptance and tolerance is very important in this approach.

Definition This is a counseling approach where the counselor does not give judgements on the information being put forth by the client and does not offer any direct advice or direction. Illustration of nondirective counselling Literally, the therapist is walking alongside the client sometimes a few paces behind, sometimes a few paces ahead, sometimes stopping to discuss where to go next, but always going wherever the client goes.

The assumptions in non directional counselling The basic assumptions related to nondirectional counselling approach are; Patient is given importance than the counselling directions and investigations Emotional aspects are more significant than intellectual aspects Creation of an atmosphere where patients can work out their understanding is more important than cultivating self understanding in the patient. Counselling leads to a voluntary choice of goals and a conscious selection of courses of actions.

Characteristics of non directional counselling It is a client-centered counseling. It is based on the principle that a person has so much capacity and drive that he can grow and develop so that he may face the situations in reality. In this school of thought, the counselor is passive to the maximum. 4. Its use reduces psychological tensions. In this type of counseling, defensiveness falls down.

Characteristics of non directional counselling In this type of counseling, there is closeness between the picture of the self-drawn by the client and a desirable or an ideal picture of his own. Through this counseling his psychological adjustment improves. Client’s behavior is considered more matured emotionally. A person is accepted in his originality, and he is free to express his any attitude. This school of thought is just reverse to that of directive counseling. In this counseling, the entire responsibility is of client or the person.

Steps in client centred counselling Carl R Rogers has formulated the following steps in nondirective counselling 4- Classification of positive & negative feelings 5 -Termination of counselling process 2-Free expression of feelings 3- Development of insight 1- defining the problem

steps…… Defining the problematic situation: The first thing is for the counsellor to define the problematic situation Free expression of feelings: After the first step, the client is made aware that he or she can express his or her feelings freely and the counselor approves this Development of insight: The counselor goes about thinking regarding the clients’ new feelings along with the development of client’s insight and goes on classifying all those new feelings

steps…… 4. Classification of positive and negative feelings: After the free expression of feelings by the client, the counsellor identifies the positive and negative feelings and classifies them. 5. Termination of counselling situation: The counsellor looks for a point where he or she can terminate the counselling situation after all the above steps. Here either the counselor or the client can suggest for termination of the counselling situation.

Advantages It helps the counselee to become independence and self reliant and to attain the ability of self direction It helps the client to attain emotional integr ity; and helps to reach his or her full growth It helps to attain more sustainable adjustment to his situation This type of counselling leaves its impression for longer period

D isadvantages It is usually more time consuming It is not suitable for a less matured and less intelligent counselee The counsellor ’s passive attitude might irritate the counselee so much that he might not express his feelings It is not p ossible in school because the counsellor has to attend to many students.

Comparison of Directive and Non-directive counselling S/N Directive Counselling Non-directive Counselling 1 Economical Time consuming 2 Emphasis is put on the problem Emphasis is put on individual 3 Emphasis is put on the intellectual aspects Emphasis is put on the emotional aspects 4 Methodology is direct and persuasive Methodology is indirect 5 Solves immediate problems Deals with self analysis and new problems of adjustment may be taken care of.

Comparison of directive and nondirective counselling S/N Directive Non-directive 6 Use psychological assessment data May not use psychological assessment 7 Counsellor plays active role Counsellor plays passive role 8 Direct counselling sometimes may be done by the supporting staff A highly professional, competent and trained person with understanding of relationship skills is required 9 Help is offered by a counsellor to take decisions Client takes his or her own decisions 10 It is more information giving, rapport formation is not so significant It is to develop self insight and more towards solving personal problem, rapport formation is essential
