surfactant, also called surface-active agent, substance such as a detergent that, when added to a liquid, reduces its surface tension, thereby increasing its spreading and wetting properties.
Surfactants are termed as surface-active agents also wetting agents, emulsifying agents or suspending agents depending on its properties and use.
Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids, between a gas & liquids, or between a liquid & a solid.

Pharmaceutical Product Development Non-ionic Surfactants & Their Applications By Kaushal Kumar
surfactant, also called surface-active agent , substance such as a detergent that, when added to a liquid, reduces its surface tension , thereby increasing its spreading and wetting properties . Surfactants are terme d as surface-active agents also wetting agents, emulsifying agents or suspending agents depending on its properties and use. Surfactants : Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids , between a gas & liquids , or between a liquid & a solid. INTRODUCTION
Mechanism Of Action Roll-up mechanism : The surfactant lowers the oil/solution & fabric/solution interfacial tension and in this way lifts the stain of the fabric. Emulsification : The surfactants lowers the oil solution interfacial tension and makes easy emulsification of the oil. Solubilization : Interaction with the micelles of a surfactant in a solvent a substance dissolve to form a stable & clear solution.
R Classification Of Surfactants Cationic surfactants are quaternary Ammonium compounds & they are widely used for their disinfectant & preservative properties as they have good bactericidal properties. They are used on skin for cleansing wounds or burn. These surfactants have excellent dermatological properties. They are frequently used in shampoos & other cosmetic products, also in handwashing liquids because of their high foaming properties. These surfactants have polar head groups that are not electrically charged. Nonionic surfactant s have covalently bonded oxygen-containing hydrophilic groups, which are bonded to hydrophobic parent structures . These surfactant s, are not ionized in water , and contain both hydrophilic groups. These surfactants are the most widely used type of surfactants for preparing shampoos because of its excellent properties and high hair conditioning effects. Cationic Anionic Amphoteric Non-ionic
Application Caster Oil Ethoxylates Castor oil ethoxylates capable of mixing immiscible materials like oil and water. These are non-ionic surfactants which are widely used in oral, topical & pharmaceutical formulations. They can be used as emulsifying or solubilizing agent as well and suitable for the production of Aqueous liquid preparations. In Cosmetics - Used as solubilizing agents for the perfume bases & Hand lotions. Castor oil has Pale yellow viscous liquid. The most important property of castor oil ethoxylates is that it has many uses both in soap production and as antistatic and antibacterial surfactant.
Application Alkylphenol Ethoxylate Alkylphenol ethoxylates are nonionic surfactants , consisting of branched-chain alkylphenols. Used As - U sed as emulsifiers for polymerization. P roduction of lubricating oil additives. Laundry & dish detergents. Emulsifiers & Solubilizers. Pesticides formulations. Personal care products, especially hair products.
Application Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates These Non-ionic Surfactants contain both hydrophobic tail portion and hydrophilic polar head groups . Therefore, they tend to dissolve in both aqueous and oil phase reducing the surface tension of liquids. Used As - Emulsifiers & in emulsifier blend formations . Wetting, Printing & Dye leveling Agent (Textile Industries) Detergents & Solubilizers textile processing. E mulsifiers in agrochemicals. P roduction of lubricating oil additives. Anti-corrosion agents in oil& gas S anitizers, dispersants, stabilizers, and anti-foaming agents .
Application Fatty Amines Ethoxylates Alcohol ethoxylates are a class of non-ionic surfactants that contain a hydrophobic alkyl chain attached via an ether linkage to a hydrophilic ethylene oxide chain. Used As - ►T extile & cosmetics industries E mulsifying & Solubilizing agents ►Cosmetics, agriculture, textile & other Wetting & cleansing agents ►Personal Care Cream base & foaming agent ►Washing Detergent
