Notes and Rests

1. Why do you think some people consider music a universal language?

A note is a musical sound that represents a sound. Different notes are worth different amounts of beats . Duration is how long the note or rest lasts .

Rests are silent beats, and still count as beats in a measure. When you see the symbol of rest in a musical piece, you remain silent for the number of beat the rest symbol has.

Look at the symbols. Write each name, tell its duration and notate its corresponding rest. Whole note Half note Quarter note Eighth note

A note or rest with a dot (.) means that a note or a rest is to receive more than its original number of beats.
