What are these?
Papaya and Mango trees… What do we get when we cut these fruits?
Seeds
Mango stone inside mango Why do we have seeds inside the fruits?
So that we can grow a new plant from that seed. That is also called ‘Germination’
These are beans… can we grow plants from it? Can we germinate them?
Yes, We can! Look at the beautiful bean plant!
Will they turn into plants when they are tightly packed in a jar?
No!...
Will they germinate in a zip lock bag with dry soil.
No!
Will they germinate when we put them in the fridge?
No! It is too cold inside the fridge.
If I dig a real deep hole and put a seed inside, will it germinate there? real deep
Note for teacher: General Wisdom for Planting Depth Common gardening wisdom advises not to plant any seed deeper than twice its diameter. Oh No… It will not get any oxygen there…
Seeds are in dormant state, they will germinate when they will have favourable conditions. What are these conditions … when the seed will germinate and turn into a seedling or baby plant?
Right temperature and light Water Oxygen through the loose soil If seed will get all these favourable conditions then only it will germinate and turn into baby plant….
Hey but would you like to know some more facts about the structure of a bean seed before you learn about germination in detail… Seed is a reproductive structure that has a baby plant inside it. And also it has food stored for the growth of the baby plant.
The hard outer cover that protects the baby plant inside, is called testa . ` Testa or outer hard coat of the seed
Hilum : where the seed was attached to the bean pod. Hilum Hilum is also know as ‘the eye’
Micropyle : from where the water can enter the seed. Micropyle Micropyle
If you dissect the bean seed from the centre , you will see two cotyledons( kaw·tuh· lee ·dnz ) . It stores the food for the tiny baby plant, until the baby plant starts producing its own food by photosynthesis. cotyledons
The tiny baby plant inside the seed is called embryo. Embryo has two parts Radicle : which starts growing first and goes downwards, and becomes root of the plant. Plumule( ploom-yool ) : which grows into shoot of the plant. Radicle Plumule
Find out where is embryo in this soaked dissected bean? Where is radicle? And where is plumule? Where is the seed coat?
Embryo Embryo
Radicle Radicle
Plumule Plumule
Seed coat
Let’s do one experiment…are you ready? Let’s try germination of bean seed in a zip lock bag. 1. Fold a tissue paper and put it in a bag. 2. Place the bag where you get some natural light and add little water so that paper becomes wet. Keep the bag open.
Water will go inside the bean through that hole ( micropyle). The seed will swell and the testa or outer coat will break and will give way out to the tiny baby plant. Do you remember that tiny baby plant ( embryo had two parts : radicle and plumule) Radicle will start growing and will go downwards. Micropyle
4. It will turn into the root system.
5. And then the plumule will grow upwards and will form the shoot of the plant.
Testa/ seed coat will drop( wither away ) from the baby plant.
Cotyledons or thick seed leaves will also wither away when the baby plant will grow big and have some more leaves.
Now c’mon, shall we plant our Rajma Beans( Kidney beans ) …. Take care, dig only one inch into the soil, put some seeds at some distance and cover them gently with love.
Sprinkle some water daily and take care of your new friend. The growing kidney bean seedlings should emerge between 10-14 days from planting . Remember Rajma bean plant is a climber, you will have to give some support to it.
On an average , it takes bean plants a little less than two months to produce beans and become fully mature
Once you harvest your rajma beans, your mummy can make nutritious and delicious Rajma chawal for you.
