Presentation on Utilization of Research Findings Presented by Rabeya Sultana Reta MSN, WHMN BSMMU 1
Concept of research utilization Research utilization is the implementation of research based knowledge (science) in practice. It is a subset of knowledge utilization, is a multifaceted concept encompassing different forms of use of research based knowledge. It is the concrete application of research in clinical practice; either in making specific decisions about patient care, or as the knowledge guiding specific interventions. 2
Definition of research utilization Research utilization is: “A process of using findings from conducting research to guide practice”. (Titler et all, 1999) “The process by which scientifically produced knowledge is transferred to practice”. (Brown, 1999) 3
Purpose and scope of utilization The application of available knowledge to improve patient outcomes. Help nurses to examine, understand and improve clinical nursing practice. Historically has a gap between research and clinical practice, some research findings are adopted by clinicians, nurses etc. Some nurses are out of research practice, other do not feel to make change in practice. Knowledge diffusion is the process by which new information becomes part of practice and subject to evaluation. 4
Facilitators of research utilization The most crucial factors are: The identification of clinically relevant problems and issues. Other factors include environments in which individuals are committed to critical thinking and to the utilization process. Nursing administrators who provide adequate resources (man, money, time) help promote research utilization. Nurses in these environments benefit from having increased understanding of research and it’s utilization. 5
Dissemination and utilization Dissemination speaks primarily to the process of knowledge transfer- the who, what, when and how of moving ideas and information from the sources to intended recipients. Utilization speaks to purpose and to impact- why i want people to get the research outcomes I am putting forth, what use I want people to make of the ideas, information or products and how people are actually using them. Both activities must be planned and conceived to meet the needs of a specific user to be efficient and ultimately successful. 6
Elements of research utilization model Dissemination & knowledge utilization 7
Nursing research utilization model Nursing research utilization were developed to enable the use or dissemination of nursing research. Improving patient outcomes is the ultimate goal of nursing research utilization models. Models: Structure Process and Outcomes 8
Barriers to research utilization Lack of perceived value of nursing research. Lack of access to resources. Lack of preparation. Lack of availability of research finding. Lack of authority to change. Patient care procedure. Lack of motivation to change practice. Lack of clinician researcher. 9
Strategies to promote utilization Simply sharing research related information with colleagues is one approach. Involvement in forming a journal club with reading and critiquing research reports with others. Attending conferences of research report presentation and discussed helps clinicians. Incorporating research findings into nursing textbooks, basic nursing education, continuing education programs and policy and procedure manuals. 10
Strategies to promote utilization cont’d. Reading summaries or abstracts of research studies or working with colleagues within one’s practice setting or professional organization often facilities the research utilization process. Every patient deserves to evidence based nursing care. Reading and using research must become integral parts of each nurse’s practice. 11
Evidence B ased Practice (EBP) Evidence based practice is the combination of individual clinical or professional expertise with the best available external evidence to produce that is most likely to lead a positive outcome for a client or patient. Evidence based nursing (EBN) is the process by which nurses make clinical decisions using the best available research evidence with their clinical expertise and patient preferences. 12
Steps of EBP Asking the related clinical questions. Searching for the best evidence. Appraising the evidence critically. Integrating evidence with clinical expertise. Patient preferences and value in in making a practice decision or change. Evaluating the practice decision on change. 13
