ADARSH VIJENDRA INSTITUTE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE “A Brief Study on nutraceutical and its impact on health care” Presented By – Mohd Sarfraz

Introduction Nutraceuticals have been defined as the phytocomplex if they derive from a food of vegetal origin, and as the pool of the secondary metabolites if they derive from a food of animal origin, concentrated and administered in the more suitable pharmaceutical form . Nutraceuticals is derived from the amalgamation of terms nutrition and pharmaceutical and was coined by Stephen De Felice in 1989 .

ABSTRACT The term “nutraceuticals” can be explained as the food items as a whole or a part which possesses some nutritional value along with the medicinal properties. This special feature, besides providing good health, leads to treatment and prevention of certain diseases. With the advancements in the qualitative and quantitative determining parameters, the requisition of these products has been found to be amplified. Due to this, the nutraceutical market has become a million dollar industry at a global level. The era of emergence of nutrients as medicines in the pharmaceutical world is of great importance and draws attention of scientists and researchers toward the appreciable benefits. The history and discovery has explored many facts about the remarkably profound therapeutic activities of such agents. As a result, interdisciplinary approaches are now been applied to design and develop various dosage forms to deliver these herbal products relative to their applications.

What is the role of nutraceuticals in health benefits? A nutraceutical product  may be used for physiological purposes or to treat a chronic illness . Sourced from plant, animal, and microbial sources, nutraceuticals include whole foods, food additives, herbs, phytonutrients, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.

What is the study of nutraceuticals? Nutraceutical is a broad term which encompasses  foods/products obtained from foods with beneficial health effects . Nutraceuticals focus on prevention rather than cure. This category of products has gained much attention due to their safe therapeutic effects other than their nutritional benefits.

What is nutraceuticals in health and nutrition? Nutraceuticals are  concentrated compounds obtained from food sources that can provide health benefits, including prevention of disease and health promotion . Examples of nutraceuticals include substances such as: Omega 3 antioxidants probiotics

What are the types of nutraceutical Dietary Fibre . Probiotics. Prebiotics. Polyunsaturated fatty acids. Antioxidant vitamins. Polyphenols. Spices.

What is the scope and importance of nutraceuticals? The nutraceuticals industry is a dynamic, evolving industry that offers exciting opportunities to merge scientific discovery with growing consumer interest in health-enhancing foods. Nutraceuticals will continue to have great appeal because they are convenient for today?s lifestyle. The greatest challenge still remains in the public policy and regulatory areas, which will encourage research and development of products that provide health benefits and permit truthful, non-misleading communications of these products while protecting public health and maintaining public confidence. Innumerable substances are known to have functional effects: soluble and insoluble fibre , phytosterols, phytoestrogens, monosaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, phenol derivatives, vitamins and other phytochemical compounds.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF NUTRACEUTICALS:

Classification of Nutraceuticals Nutraceuticals have been classified based on their application into  traditional, non-traditional, fortified, recombinant, phytochemical, herbal, functional foods, dietary supplements, probiotics and prebiotics. Anti-Cancer Activity Anti-Inflammatory Activity Antioxidant Activity Anti-Lipid Activity

CONCLUSION: There is a long history of nutraceutical use in the treatment of illness, and these chemicals have a position in current and future medicine. However, additional research is needed to ensure the items' safety, enhanced quality, purity, efficiency, health-promoting, and disease-curing effects, as well as a greater awareness of the various methods that go into item development. When taking supplements, extreme caution is very essential. As a result, there is a need for basic discussion and studies on the benefits, suggested, daily consumption, and potential side effects of supplement use. After that, we can replace the ancient proverb "an apple day keeps the doctor away" with "nutraceutical day may keep the doctor away." Nutraceuticals will be promoted in the future to promote healthy health.
