Fixed / Flexible / Free: How Atlassian R&D Does
Program Management

This tale begins with drinking our own champagne…

When deciding on if a pattern is Fixed, Flexible or Free we check:
Support Atlassian @ Scale
When it makes sense for multiple
programs to be ‘talking the same
language’ to ensure alignment or for
stakeholders to be able to compare
‘apples with apples’ then we expect these
patterns to be ‘fixed’.
Prioritize PgMAutonomy
We hire smart people who have solid PgM
skills and experience. We don’t need to
prescribe ‘how’ PgMsshould do all their
work!
Unleash PgMs
FFF guidance should be a net
positive enabling more PgM
bandwidth to be spent on
bespoke program work and
innovative problem
solving/program delivery.

An Agile Mindset
An agile mindsetfocuses on “being agile” as a foundation for success in “doing agile.” It is defined
by the four valuesand described by the twelve principlesof the Agile Manifesto and then
manifested through an unlimited number of practices and different ways of working.
The four values of the Agile Manifesto are the foundation of an agile mindset. In a world full of
competing methodologies and frameworks, these values serve as common ground for agile
practitioners.
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

Agile: It's Not
Just for Software
Anymore
●Embrace the power of
"Yes, and..." to build on
ideas.
●Fail fast, learn faster -it's all
part of the process.
●Let go of perfection and
make progress iteratively.
●Stay flexible and adaptable
to changing circumstances.
●Keep it light and fun -
laughter fuels creativity!

Leveraging AI
for Agility
●AI can analyze vast datasets to
identify patterns and trends.
●AI algorithms can adapt to
changing circumstances in real
time.
●AI can automate repetitive tasks,
freeing up human workers to focus
on creative problem-solving.
●AI can help teams identify and
respond to potential risks more
quickly.
●AI can facilitate communication and
collaboration across teams.

Benefits of AI in
the Workplace
●Improved decision-making
through data-driven insights
●Increased efficiency and
productivity through automation
●Enhanced risk management and
mitigation
●Faster innovation and
adaptation to market changes
●Stronger collaboration and
communication within teams

Summary and Key Takeaways
●AI can analyze data, adapt to change,
automate tasks, and help teams identify risks.
●AI benefits the workplace by improving
decision-making, efficiency, and innovation.
●Agile principles, like embracing "Yes, and..."
and failing fast, can be applied beyond
software development.
●Thank you for your time.
