RESEARCH Title - Occupational Noise Exposure and Hearing: A Systematic Review Authors - Arve Lie , Marit Skogstad , Akon A. Johannsson , Tore Tynes , Ingrid Sivesind Mehlum , Karl-Christian Nordby,Bo Engdahl , Kristian Tambs The study was conducted in Norway, with affiliations to the National Institute of Occupational Health (STAMI) and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

Occupational hazard due to noise poll ution Occupational noise is a common workplace hazard worldwide. Causes irreversible hearing loss, tinnitus, cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbance, reduced cognition. Gap between regulations and implementation, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

O BJECTIVES Evaluate prevalence and health effects of occupational noise. Synthesize auditory and non-auditory hazards. Identify vulnerable occupational groups. Discuss preventive strategies and regulatory standards. Highlight research gaps and propose future directions.

Review of Literature – Health Effects Auditory: Noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, vestibular disorders. Non-Auditory: Cardiovascular disease, mental health effects, sleep disturbance, accident risk.

Review of Literature – Exposure & Prevention Standards: WHO (85 dBA ), NIOSH (85 dBA , 3 dB exchange), OSHA (90 dBA , 5 dB exchange). Risk Factors: Factors such as age, gender, genetics, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, vibration, and exposure to chemicals exacerbate the risk of NIHL. High-Risk Occupations: Military personnel, construction workers, and agricultural workers are at increased risk due to high noise exposure. Preventive Measures: Hearing conservation programs, regular hearing checks, and noise control strategies have shown effectiveness in reducing NIHL. engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE, hearing conservation programs.

M ETHODS OF RESEARCH The authors conducted a systematic literature search across multiple databases, including Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase , Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest Health and Safety Sciences Abstracts. Studies were selected based on inclusion criteria related to occupational noise exposure and hearing loss. A total of 698 relevant studies were quality-assessed using a comprehensive checklist for observational studies.

R ESULTS / F INDINGS Prevalence : NIHL is a significant occupational health problem, with varying prevalence across industries and regions. Risk Factors: Age, gender, genetics, and exposure to other harmful agents like chemicals and vibration increase the risk of NIHL. Preventive Strategies: Effective strategies include engineering controls (e.g., noise reduction), administrative controls (e.g., job rotation), and personal protective equipment (e.g., earplugs). Regulatory Measures: Stricter enforcement of noise regulations and regular monitoring are essential to mitigate the risk of NIHL.

C ONCLUSION Occupational noise is preventable but persistent.
Auditory and systemic impacts are well-documented.
Stricter enforcement and awareness are critical.
