What is OCLC? OCLC is the world’s largest, non-profit, cooperative of libraries. It facilitates library cooperation in cataloging, inter-library loan, virtual reference, digital archiving, and other services. Host of the Dewey Decimal Classification and of the world’s largest union catalog of library bibliographic data (known as WorldCat ) , OCLC is also host to OCLC Research, a leading applied research center for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions. 5/9/2013

History Originally named the Ohio College Library Center, OCLC began in 1967 through a collaboration of Ohio university. The group first met on July 5, 1967 on the campus of The Ohio State University to sign the articles of incorporation for the nonprofit organization. 5/9/2013

Plan and Goal The plan was to merge the catalogs of Ohio libraries electronically through a computer network and database in order to streamline operations, control costs, and increase efficiency in library management. The goal of this network and database was to bring libraries together to cooperatively keep track of the world’s information in order to best serve researchers and scholars. 5/9/2013

The first library to do online cataloging through OCLC was the Alden Library at Ohio University on August 26, 1971. This was the first occurrence of onlinecataloging by any library worldwide. 5/9/2013

Product and Service 5/9/2013

WorldCat ® WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services. WorldCat libraries are dedicated to providing access to their resources on the Web, where most people start their search for information. 5/9/2013

How it work Collection data —The databases or packages purchased by your library . Title data— Titles that are part of a collection, including descriptive and identifier metadata . Holdings data— An inventory of the titles to which your library or consortium subscribes . Linking logic— Citation data and your institution's affiliation are combined with linking logic defined by the knowledge base to create a link to the full text at the article or title level. 5/9/2013

Features of Search many libraries at once for an item and then locate it in a library nearby Find books, music, and videos to check out Find research articles and digital items (like audiobooks) that can be directly viewed or downloaded Link to "Ask a Librarian" and other services at your library Post your review of an item, or contribute factual information about it 5/9/2013

WorldCat ® Local WorldCat Local is a webscale discovery solution that delivers single-search-box access to more than 1.103 billion items from your library and the world's library collections. You'll find : 788+ million articles with one-click access to full text 36+ million digital items from trusted sources like Google Books, OAIster and HathiTrust 14+ million eBooks from leading aggregators and publishers 47+ million pieces of evaluative content (Tables of Contents, cover art, summaries, etc.) included at no additional charge 227+ million books in libraries worldwide 5/9/2013

VIAF ™ The Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) is an international service designed to provide convenient access to the world's major name authority files. Its creators envision the VIAF as a building block for the Semantic Web to enable switching of the displayed form of names for persons to the preferred language and script of the Web user. VIAF began as a joint project with the Library of Congress (LC), the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB), the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF) and OCLC. It has, over the past decade, become a cooperative effort involving an expanding number of other national libraries and other agencies. At the beginning of 2012, contributors include 20 agencies from 16 countries. 5/9/2013
