Sir John Everett Millais : "Ophelia" 1851

"Ophelia": John Everett
Millais
Millais's iconic painting
"Ophelia" shows the scene
in which Ophelia, driven
mad by Hamlet’s taunts,
falls into a brook and
ultimately drowns.
"Ophelia" still remains one
of the most popular
paintings in the Tate
collection, and the story of
its creation has captured
the imagination as much as
the final painting beauty.

The model for "Ophelia" was
Elizabeth Siddall, who
featured in several Pre-
Raphaelite paintings and
became Dante Gabriel
Rossetti muse and wife.
Millais’s treatment of the
model for the painting has
become infamous, as he
forced the young Elizabeth
Siddalto lie fully clothed in
a tub of cold water while he
completed his work.
