Lesson 1 Speech Preparation: Topic and Audience

1 Use principles of effective speech writing focusing on audience profile (EN11/12OC-IIcj25.1).

identify important considerations in choosing a topic and in writing for a particular audience; conduct an audience analysis; and generate topics based on the audience profile.

Why should one consider the relationship between the topic and the audience in speech?

Quick Writes You are faced with the following situation: You accompanied your older sibling to attend a talk and workshop on calligraphy. How will you feel or react to the talk based on the topic? What will you most likely do during the talk and workshop? Write your thoughts on a piece of paper. Afterward, share your thoughts in class and compare your notes with your classmates.

How do you prepare for your speech? How do you choose a topic for your speech? Review

Two Important Aspects in Speech Writing Process Audience Topic

The audience is the target listeners. They should also be considered in choosing a topic. Audience In writing your speech, you should take into account the following: Demography Situation Psychology

Topic It is the subject matter that will be discussed in the speech. In choosing a topic, you must consider the following: Consider the needs and interests of the audience. Know the purpose of the event. Identify the purpose of the speech. Select a topic based on your area(s) of expertise.

Speech Preparation Process Conduct an audience analysis. Determine the purpose of the speech. Select a topic. Narrow down the topic.

Write True if the statement is correct or False if it is not. Knowing the audience and the occasion is crucial in writing a speech. Using many technical terms is acceptable for an audience composed of people from different fields. The use of gender-sensitive language should be observed in preparing a speech. The venue may affect the speech preparation. Audience analysis should be done prior to speech writing.

Identify the following. This describes the cyclical and repetitive process of speech writing. This should be conducted in order to determine the basic profile of the audience. This can be established on a speaker if one speaks on topics that are considered to be in his/her league of expertise. This purpose of the speech intends to impart knowledge or relevant ideas regarding a particular topic. This pertains to the main point of a speech. This is where all the ideas in a speech revolve around.

Audience Analysis Choose one of the speeches or essays that you have written in the previous lessons. Write a general audience analysis based on who could possibly listen or read your speech or essay. Attach your speech/essay to this worksheet for submission.

Values Integration Reflect on this quotation from Ben Jonson: “To speak and to speak well are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks.”

The Breakfast of Champions Form groups with five members each. Select one type of breakfast silog meal cereals pandesal and spread champorado coffee only

Conduct an audience analysis of the type of person they believe would patronize that specific breakfast. Analyze the possible interests and personality traits of your ‘breakfast patrons’. Use this worksheet for your research. Explain the evidence that led you to make certain conclusions regarding the ‘breakfast patrons’. Using your audience profile, write two topics that would possibly appeal to them. The Breakfast of Champions

Ask a representative of the group to present the following in front: Description of the breakfast Explanation on the audience profile you have generated Two potential topics

Explain this important point from Arthur Koch. Cite a concrete example or application of this in preparing, writing, and delivering a speech. “No matter how good a speech looks on paper or how well it is delivered, its success or failure must always be measured in terms of audience response.” Assignment
