Don’t worry! We have a way to familiarize ourselves with these ordinal numbers faster.

Match the ending sound 1. Special Ordinal Numbers 1st ends in " st " like the word "first." 2nd ends in " nd " like the word "second." 3rd ends in " rd " like the word "third." 4th ends in " th " like the word "fourth."

Match the ending sound 2. For numbers 5th to 20th - All of these end in th " (like "fifth" and "twentieth") ". Ordinal numbers that end with a “5” typically have “fifth” in them.

Match the ending sound 3. For numbers 21st to 100th - The pattern repeats every ten: Look at the last digit (like 21, 32, 43). If the last digit is 1, it ends in " st " (21st, 31st). If the last digit is 2, it ends in " nd " (22nd, 32nd). If the last digit is 3, it ends in " rd " (23rd, 33rd). If the last digit is 4-9 or 0, it ends in " th " (24th, 25th, 30th).

Match the ending sound In addition, numbers that ends with a 0 (aside from 10) like 20, 30, 40, etc. have the “ ieth ” ending in their ordinal forms. “Twenty” becomes “twentieth” not “ twentyth ”
