2. AN ACCOUNT OF THE ORIGIN OF HOTEL INDUSTRY INN KEEPING: An outgrowth of man’s urge to travel, roads used by merchants and couriers. Believed started 12,000 years ago. Concept of Hospitality started in Greece, ancient Rome and Biblical times. 6 th century B.C.(establishment of money). 7 th and 8 th centuries Monasteries provided Hospitality.

Pascal (1650) Café and Coffee house were opened by him in Paris and London. Industrial Revolution (1750-1820) English inns developed around London-finest in the world. Francis Tavern (1783)

4. AN ACCOUNT OF THE ORIGIN OF HOTEL INDUSTRY GROWTH OF ORGANIZED HOTEL INDUSTRY: First Hotel building was ‘City Hotel’ in New York in1794. Tremont House- A first class hotel made in Boston in 1829. In 1839 first ‘Railway Hotel’ was made by London and Birmingham. By the end of 19 th Century in 1880 one of the best hotels in London was “Bristol”. Many other elegant hotels like Waldorf Astoria, in New York, Denvels Brown Palace, San Francisco Palace etc. were made.

5. HOTEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA MusMm Musafir Khanas and Sarais were developed during Mughal period. Sarais started inns and western style style hotels with the coming of Britishers in important cities like Calcutta and Bombay.

HOTEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA MusMmT TAJ GROUP OF HOTELS In 1903, JRD TATA started Indian Hotels Company Ltd and the first Hotel in International standards was constructed the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. HOTEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA Formation of ITDC: In 1964 three corporations were set up by Government of India, India Tourism & Hotel Corporation India Tourism Corporation Ltd, and India Tourism & Transport Corporation In 1966, these three corporations were merged and formed “India Tourism and Development Corporation of India” (ITDC).

8. HOTEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA WELCOM GROUP It is the hotel division of ITC Ltd started in1975 with their first hotel Chola Sheraton Madras. The logo represents a traditional welcome in the form of ‘Namaste’ and with a motto ‘we enjoy people’.

9. HOTEL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA Oberoi Hotels Rai Bahadur M.S.Oberoi started his hotel career as a clerk in 1922 at Faletti’s Cecil Hotel in Shimla . Later Mr.Ernest Clarke sold his share to Mr.M.S.Oberoi , on August 14, 1934 and became the owner of Clarke’s Hotel, Shimla and Delhi.He established Oberoi Hotel Pvt.Ltd in 1946. Later on 26 th May, 1949, established East India Hotel Ltd(EIHL) at Calcutta.
