Chemistry F.A-1 Oxidising agents and reducing agent Submitted to – Mrs. Chetna mam From- H imanshu Arora Class-10 B

What is oxidation? Oxidation means the addition of oxygen to a substance and the removal of hydrogen from a substance is called oxidation.

What is reduction? It means the addition of hydrogen to a substance and the removal of oxygen to a substance is called reduction.

What is redox ? It is reaction in which both oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously.

For Example Cuo + H 2 Cu + H 2 O R eduction Oxidation H 2 S + Cl 2 S + 2HCl Reduction Oxidation

What is oxidising agent? The substance which gives oxygen for oxidation and the substance which remove the hydrogen is called oxidising agents.

What is reducing agent ? The substance which give hydrogen for reduction and the substance which remove oxygen is called reducing agents.

For examples ZnO + C Zn + CO Heat reduction oxidation Substance oxidised – C Substance reduced – ZnO Oxdising agent – ZnO Reducing agent - C

MnO 2 + 4HCl MnCl 2 + Cl 2 + 2H 2 O Reduction Oxidation Substance Oxidised – 4HCl Substance reduced – MnO 2 Reducing Agent – 4HCl Oxidising Agent – MnO 2s
