Introduction PAIN :-Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.

Labour pain Pain is a common labour symptom and located in the abdomen, back , pelvis floor, perineum or other location.

Factor which affect the intensity of pain in women in labour

Uterine contraction Cervix dilatation Hormonal changes Pressure on cervix from the fetus Parity ( primipara need pain management more frequently then multipara ) Pain threshold of the women Coping machanism Surrounding environments

Methods of pain relief

Pharmacological method 1. sedatives and analgesics pethidine 50-100mg/IM Fentanyl 50-100mg/IM Morphine 1mmg/IM Meperidine 5-25mg (IM/IV)

Pudendal block A pudendal nerve block is an injection in your pelvic region that can provide temporary pain relief.  It is given prior to episiotomy suturing or forecep delivery.

Epidural anasthesia It is the safest and simplest method for pain relief. in which anesthetic medications are injected into the epidural space( L2-L3) by epidural needle  to block sensory and motor spinal nerve roots.

Inhalation gas N2O in the form of entonox onset of action ( 1-2min ) for short action effect [2-8min].

Spinal anasthesia The drug into the subarchnoid space of L3 and L4 interspace

Perineal infiltration It is done 2- 3 min before performing episiotomy. In this 10 ml of lignocaine is infiltration in fan wise manner .

BIRTHING BALL EXERCISE

How to do Place a yoga mat on the floor and keep the birthing bal. Assist the mother to sit over the ball comfortably . Try variety of comfortable position on birthing ball to relieve pain in labour. Hold the mother and start initially with breathing technique 1-10 count after that for and through move.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is traditional chinesse medical practice that involve insertion of thin needle into specific points on the body . In this pressure is put on the various point n the body by insertion of needles which can produce sedation and analgesic through the release of beta- endorphine .

Acupressure Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but the person uses their fingers instead of needles to work the point.

Psychoprophylaxis A method of preparing women for natural child birth by mean of spacial breathing and relaxation . In this methods use to prepare women for labour and manage labour pain. It is a key component of many child birth education program .
