oAfter completing this course, students are expected to
be able to identify, classify, and compose paragraphs of
descriptive text

Descriptive textis a text which describes
person/place/animal and other things specifically.
Generic structure
1. Identification
Identification is the very beginning part of paragraph. It tells
about the background, the introduction of who,
what, which will be described in the text.
2. Description
Description contains the quality or specific character which
belongs to the things you are talking about.

Ways of Describing People
1.Describingsomeone’sappearance
oTodescribesomeone’sappearance,youwilloftenuseadjectives.Anadjectiveisakindof
wordthatdescribesanoun(aperson,placeorthing).
oTodescribesomeone’sheight,youcansay‘Theyaretallorshort’.
oMensometimeshavehairontheirfaces.Hairthatcoversthechinandcheeksiscalled
abeard.Whenthere’shaironlyabovethelipsit’samoustache.Abeardthat’sonlyonthe
chincanbecalledagoatee.Noneoftheseareadjectives.Theyareallnouns.Todescribe
someonewithabeard,youwouldsay,‘Hehasabeard’.
oHowdoesapersonlookoverall?Ifyouthinkawomanisattractive,youcansay‘She
isbeautiful’,prettyormaybeevengorgeous(verybeautiful).Youcancallanattractive
manhandsome.Bothmenandwomencanbegood-looking.
oIfsomeonedresseswell,‘Theyaresmartlydressed’,‘Theylooksmart’,orjustsay‘They
arewell-dressed’.Ifsomeonedressesfashionably,‘Theyarestylishortrendy’.

oSomeone’smannerismsarethewaytheyactorspeak.Whenyouspeak,doyoumoveyour
armsalot?Doyoutouchyourhairorbiteyourlip?Allthesethingsaremannerisms.
oSincemannerismsareusuallyactions,theyareoftendescribedbyphrases
withverbs(actionwords).
3.Describingsomeone’scharacter
oAperson’scharacteristheirpersonality,whotheyareontheinside.Whenyoutalkabout
someone,youmightmentionwhattheyarelikeasaperson.
oWeallknowpeoplewhoareniceandkind.Theyareapleasuretobewithandalways
seemtobesmiling.Thesepeopleareusuallyalsofriendlyandgenerous.Peoplewhoare
generousliketohelpothersbygivingthemthings.Someonewhoistheoppositeofnice
ismean.Meanpeoplecanbeunpleasant,nastyorvicious.
oSomepeoplealwaysshowrespecttoothers,whichmakesthempoliteandwell-
mannered.Someonewhodoesn’tcareaboutother’sfeelingsorrules
isrudeandimpolite.Iftheyusebadlanguage,youcansaytheyarevulgarorobscene.

4.Describingsomeone’sfeelings
oYoucanusethesewordstotalkabouthowsomeoneisfeeling,howtheywerefeeling
beforeorhowtheymightfeelinthefuture.
oSomeonehappymightbedescribedaselated,exuberant,cheerful,delightedor
evenecstatic(very,veryhappy).
oSomeonesadmightbedescribedasmelancholy,miserable(verysad)oroutofsorts.
oDidthepersonyou’redescribinggetenoughsleeplastnight?Ifnot,theymight
looktiredorwornout.Iftheylookextremelytired,theymightbeexhausted.Sleeping
wellmakesapersonlookwell-rested.
oIfsomeonelookslikethey’renotinterestedinwhat’sgoingonaroundthem,theymight
seembored.Ifthey’reveryinterested,youmightsaythey’reenthusiastic.
