Parts of Speech There are 8 parts of speech Noun Pronoun 3. Verb Adjective Adverb 6. Preposition 7. Conjunction 8. Interjection
1. Noun Noun : thing, person and animal There are 2 types of noun: Common Noun : woman, ball, dog 2. Proper Noun is usually written in capital letter such as King Bhumiphol , Japan, Paris, Effel Tower, Hua Hin
Singular and Plural Noun Singular noun shows the only one thing such as: book, car, flower and computer Plural noun shows more than one and is formed by adding “s” such as books, cars, flowers and computers Some forms of plural nouns are changed such as: child – children, mouse, mice, etc .
2.Pronoun Pronoun is defined as a word used which can be used instead of a noun. There are 3 types of pronoun : Personal Pronoun Possessive Pronoun Reflexive Pronoun
Among pronoun, there are singular and plural 1. Singular Pronouns are I, he, she, it, you 2. Plural Pronouns are you, we, they ----------------------------------------------------------- Some pronouns show masculinity (male)or feminine (female) : he, she, it. Some pronouns show function as subject or object : he-him, she-her, I-me.

3. Verb(s) Verb(s) is/are defined as a word or words which show(s) action or state of being . such as (to) be, have, do, like, work, can, must. “ Verb is the heart of a sentence ” or “ every sentence must have a verb .” For example: 1. The dog bit the man. 2. The man is sitting on a chair. 3. She is a smart girl.
Tense: Verbs have relationship to time and there are many tenses in English. We will study only 5 tenses in this course: 1. Present Tense 2. Past Tense 3. Future Tense 4. Present Continuous Tense 5. Present Perfect Tense
1. Present Simple Tense 1. Verb tells something happens daily or everyday. He goes to school everyday . 2. Verb tells about fact or habit. My father often washes his car by himself. The sun rises in the east. (=fact) 3. Verb tells about tradition or culture. We celebrate New Year on the 1 st of January. Subject + Verb 1.
2. Past Simple Tense 1. Verb tells the situation happened in the past with some words indicating time. 2. Verb must be in past form (V.2) He went to Paris last year . He did his homework last night . Peter didn’t attend English class yesterday . Remark: There are two kinds of V.2 1. Regular Verb: played, acted, tried 2. Irregular Verb: go, be, eat, bite, lose, etc. Subject + V.2
3. Future Tense/Modals Future Tense indicates the time in the future with some future words: - He will graduate next year . - Jang will travel to America next week. - Our students will graduate in 2016 . Remark: Modal is a type of auxiliary verb ( will/shall) that are can, could, would, must, have to, may, might, should, ought to) Subject + will/shall + V.infinitive
4. Present Continuous Tense It indicates the action of time at the moment. - I am studying EN011 now. - We are riding the elephant. 2. There is the adverb of time - The bus is coming soon . - My mother is cooking Italian food at the moment. Subject + is/am/are + V.ing
5. Present Perfect Tense 1. It indicates the action happening in the past and continue up to present. - I have lived in Phuket since I was ten. - My brother has been a steward in THAI Airways International. 2. It indicates the result of time from the past to present. - My father has been to England since May. - My sister has gone to America since 2013 . Subject + has/have + V.3
4. Adjective Adjective is defined as a word which describes or modifies Noun or Pronoun. - The lazy, old, brown dog sat on the rug. - The man is dark, tall and handsome . Most above adjectives do not change form. * Possessive Adjective * will change form in different singular and plural such as: - This is my dog. Or - I don’t like my hairstyle .
5. Adverb Adverb is defined as giving more information about verb, adjective, and adverb. 1 .Usually adverb will be ended with _ ly , but some adverb won’t do that such as “ fast ” 2.Adverb of Time : tells when something happens such as now , then , soon , today , etc. 3.Adverb of Frequency : tells how often something happens such as always , sometimes , usually , never , rarely , once , etc.
6. Preposition Preposition is defined as words that have relation between other function words for example noun. “ Preposition will be placed in front of noun.” He walks to school everyday. - That man in Room 404 is Mr. Smith.
There are two important types of preposition Preposition of Time: in, on, at, etc . I like to stay in Chiangmai in January . I don’t like to work on Monday . 2. Preposition of Place: in, on, at, etc. We drive on Phaholyothin Road . My cousins stay in Oriental Hotel .
7. Conjunction Conjunction is defined as combining words, phrase and/or sentence to make a complete sentence. There are two types of conjunction , we will study about Coordinating Conjunctions that are : and……+and……+and……… both…..and , as well as , and also , but , yet , or, either or , otherwise , or else , then , etc.
8. Interjection Interjection is defined as the expression of short exclamation , which sometimes inserted into a sentence. For example : ouch, oh! , hi! , hey , cool! , wow! well , Umm…., uh! , huh… etc.
