There are 8 parts of speech in the English language: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb Adjective, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection. The part of speech indicates how the words functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence.

Noun A Noun is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are often used with an article (the, a, an), but not always. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter; common nouns do not. Example: Person: Man, Women, Teacher Place: Home, Office, Town Thing: Table, Car, Banana, money, music, etc

Pronoun A pronoun is a word used in a place of noun. A pronoun is usually substituted for a specific noun, which is called its antecedent. Example: He, she, they, yours, himself, herself, me, we, ourselves, who, whom, my, that, etc.
Examples of pronouns used in sentences I reached home at six in the evening. Did someone see a red bag on the counter? Is this the boy who won the first prize? That is my mom. I hurt myself yesterday when we were playing cricket.
Verb The verb in a sentence expresses action or being. There is a main verb and sometimes one or more verb helping verbs. Examples: run, dance, slide, jump, think, eat, walk, do, go, stand, write etc

Adjective An adjective is a word used to modify or describe a noun or a pronoun. It usually answers the question of which one, what kind, or how many. Examples: charming, cruel, fantastic, gentle, huge, perfect, pretty, rough, ugly, short etc
Examples of adjectives used in sentences The place we visited yesterday was serene . Did you see how big that dog was? The weather is pleasant today. The red dress you wore on your birthday was lovely. My brother had only one chapati for breakfast.
Adverb An adverb describes or modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, but never a noun. It usually answers the questions of when, where, how, why, under what conditions, or to what degree. Adverbs often end in – ly . Example: fully, almost, secretly, normally, occasionally, greatly, cheerfully etc.
Examples of adverbs used in sentences Did you come here to buy an umbrella? I did not go to school yesterday as I was sick . Ahmed reads the newspaper everyday . Can you please come quickly ? Bilal was so sleepy that he could hardly keep his eyes open during the meeting.
Preposition A proposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence. Example: Abroad, above, about, across, along, among, like, into, plus, against etc.
Examples of prepositions used in sentences The teacher asked the students to draw lines on the paper so that they could write in straight lines. The child hid his birthday presents under his bed. Mom asked me to go to the store near my school. The thieves jumped over the wall and escaped before we could reach home.
Conjunction A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses, and indicates the relationship between the elements joined. Example: and, or, but, nor, for, so etc

Interjection An interjection is a word used to express emotion. It is often followed by exclamation point. Example: Ooh!, Sorry!, Very well! etc.
