Parts of Speech English Revision

Parts of Speech Nouns Pronouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs

Nouns words that name a person, place, thing, qualities and ideas Example: "John," "School," "Bird," "Friendship"

Pronouns words that take the place of nouns, used to avoid repeating the nouns that they refer to

Reflexive Pronouns We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of a verb are the same person. We also use it to add more emphasis on the subject. Examples: I saw myself in the mirror. The child isn’t old enough to feed himself .

Verbs words that express actions or states of being Types of Verbs Action Verbs: These verbs express physical or mental action. Stative Verbs: These verbs describe a state rather than an action. They aren't usually used in the present continuous form. Linking verbs: These verbs are used to link the subjects in a sentence to the other parts of the sentence so that it is meaningful. Helping Verbs: These verbs assist the main verb in expressing tense, mood, or voice. Example: "run," "jump," "think," "exist"

Types of Verbs Action/Dynamic Verbs        Vs.        Stative Verbs

Types of Verbs Linking Verbs        Vs.        Helping Verbs A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence to an adjective, noun, or pronoun that completes the meaning of the verb. They do not show action but rather express a state of being or condition. Examples: He seems happy. The cake is delicious. A helping verb is a verb that helps another verb and is employed in a sentence to modify the tense, voice or mood of the sentence. Helping verbs cannot stand alone. It helps to form verb phrases and create the correct tense Examples: What are you doing? We are having spaghetti for dinner tonight.

Question Is it a linking verb? or a helping verb? If the verb comes before a main verb, then it is helping .  If it comes before words that are describing the subject then it's linking. She is my friend. She is playing football. linking verb helping verb

Phrasal Verbs Phrasal verbs are groups of words that combine a verb with an adverb or a preposition to make a new meaning. Examples: This is the form. Please can you fill it in ? Why are you bringing that argument up now? Police are looking into connections between the two crimes. We need to come up with a solution. Example: "pick up," "turn on," "look after," "get up"

Adjectives              Adverbs An adjective is a word used to modify or describe a noun or pronoun. Some adjectives end with -ed and -ing Adjectives that end in -ed generally describe emotions – they tell us how people feel. Adjectives that end in -ing generally describe the thing that causes the emotion Examples: That’s a big house. Look at the grey horse. A boring movie makes you feel bored . An adverb is a word that can modify or describe a verb, adjective, another adverb, or entire sentence. Adverbs are usually formed by adding -ly to the end of an adjective (e.g., “quick” becomes “quickly”) Adverbs of manner Adverbs of time Adverbs of place Examples: Ali walked quickly . It is an incredibly exciting film. He swims well .     Adverbs of frequency Adverbs of degree
