Patterns and Numbers in Nature Prepared by: Luzell R. Pagasian Saint Columban College| 2024

The term Mathematics is derived from two Greek words “ manthanein ” which means learning and “ techne ” an art of t echnique. Therefore, mathematics means the art of learning related disciplines. Mathematics is defined as the science of quantity, measurement and special relation. 1

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement. Math is all around us, in everything we do. It is the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices, architecture (ancient and modern), art, money, engineering, and even sports. 2

How else do you define Mathematics? 3

MATHEMATICS IS A SCIENCE OF DISCOVERY Mathematics give an easy and early opportunity to make independent discoveries. It is the discovery of relationships and the expression of those relationship in symbolic form. 4

5 MATHEMATICS IS AN INTELLECTUAL GAME Mathematics in mainly a matter of puzzles, paradoxes, and problem solving.

6 MATHEMATICS IS A TOOL SUBJECT Mathematics has its integrity, its beauty, its structure and many other features that relate to Mathematics as an end in itself.

7 MATHEMATICS INVOLVES AN INTUITIVE METHOD The first step in the learning of any mathematical subject is the development of intuition. This must come before the rules are stated or formal operations are introduced.

8 MATHEMATICS HAS ITS OWN LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS The language for communication of mathematical ideas is largely in terms of symbols and words which everybody cannot understand.

Qualitative Method 9 MATHEMATICS AS AN ABSTRACT SCIENCE Mathematics concepts are abstract in the sense that they cannot be seen or felt in the physical world.

10 MATHEMATICS IS A LOGIC Logic is an important factor in mathematics; it governs the pattern of deductive proof through which mathematics is developed.

11 MATHEMATICS DEALS WITH ART OF DRAWING CONCLUSIONS In Mathematics the conclusion are certain and definite. Therefore, the learner can check the correct solutions.

12 NEEDS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF LEARNING MATHEMATICS Mathematics learning helps to apply mathematical concepts and theorems to new situations. Mathematics provides a clear understanding of laws of nature.  Mathematics helps in clear understanding of the culture and development of r civilization. Mathematics learning helps to thinks alternative methods of solving problems Mathematics provides a framework for solving problems. Mathematics is a powerful too in the hands of the learners. Mathematics learning helps in a better understanding of the world around us

Cooking – when we cook, we need to measure the ingredients in terms of tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces, grams, kilograms etc.; messing up with measurements can result in disastrous meals Diet – people who are overweight need to be conscious of their calorie intake. Especially if they are on special weight loss. Diet knowledge of math is need to calculate the total amount of calories consumed in a day Banking – it is probably the one place where math is used more than anywhere else. No one without basic knowledge about math can’t do anything in  bank Arts – math is also used by artists while making paintings, designing collages as well as during dance performances. In all these cases the size of canvas, the size of the stage, etc. play a very important role and deciding all these aspects is literally impossible without the knowledge of math. Shopping – this is probably the most common use of math in which we make a list of things we need to buy as well as make payments. Gardening – or planning to sow seeds or count the number of plants everything requires numbers. All tasks carried out inside a garden require proper measurements. MATHEMATICS IN DAILY LIFE 13

18 PATTERNS Natural patterns include symmetries, fractals, spirals, meanders, waves, foams, tessellations, cracks and stripes. Studying patterns allow one to watch, guess, create and discover.

19 1. Symmetry is an exact correspondence of form and constituent configuration on opposite sides of a dividing line or plane or about a center or and axis.

20 a. Reflection or Bilateral It is also called mirror symmetry or line symmetry. It is made with a line going through an object which divides it into two pieces which are mirror images of each other.

21 b. Radial Symmetry Radial symmetry is rotational symmetry around a fixed point known as the center.

22 b. Translational Symmetry This kind of symmetry is exhibited by objects which do not change its size and shape even if it moved to another location. Note that the movement does nor involve with reflection or rotation.

23 2. Fractals These are never-ending patterns that are self-similar across different scales. The image just reappears repeatedly no matter how many times the object is magnified.

24 3. Spiral These are curved patterns made by series of circular shapes revolving around a central point.

25 4. Spots and stripes Patterns are also exhibited in the external appearances of animals.

26 5. Flower Petals Flowers are easily considered as things of beauty. Their vibrant colors and fragrant odors make them very appealing as gifts and decorations

27 6. Number Patterns and Sequences Consider this pattern.
