Physical Health and Wellness Grade 9 • Unit 1
The knowledge gained in this unit can be applied to the following: describing the various lifestyle-related diseases performing physical activities involved in the components of health and skill-related fitness valuing the importance of knowing proper eating habits 2 Practical Applications
Central Question 3 How can we maximize technology in achieving a healthy lifestyle?
Physical Education MAPEH Health-Related and Skill-Related Fitness Components and Assessments Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to do the following: Define health-related and skill-related fitness components. Describe the different health-related and skill-related physical fitness components. Perform assessments for each physical fitness component. 5 Learning Targets
6 Weight lifting is an example of a physical exercise. Recharge
Form 11 groups. Choose a representative for your group. The groups’ representatives will pick a strip of paper from a box. Each strip of paper contains a phrase that describes a specific health-related or skill-related physical fitness component. Brainstorm with your group for five minutes and come up with a sentence using the phrase that your representative picked. The sentence should define a specific component of either health-related or skill-related fitness. Write the sentence on a separate piece of paper and present it to the class. 7 Instructions
8 Paper Strips: strong heart, healthy lungs, and clear blood vessels exert certain amount of force without getting exhausted range of motion what makes up your body change direction quickly maximum effort in a short period of time distance covered two or more body parts move at the same time upright position or posture react quickly to stimuli
9 Recharge Activity Processing Running is a physical activity. What are your observations about the phrases? What is the difference between health-related and skill-related physical fitness components? In your opinion, what is the importance of knowing these physical fitness components?
10 In this lesson, we will learn about the components of the definition of physical health. Enlighten
11 Physical Fitness Physical fitness is the state in which a person can carry out regular activities without quickly becoming exhausted. He or she still has the energy to do hobbies or be functional in emergency situations.
Healthy Lifestyle 12 Having a healthy lifestyle involves making better choices in terms of eating habits, staying active, and maintaining the appropriate weight for one’s age and height.
13 Components of the Definition of Physical Health
14 Physical Activity This refers to recreational activities and more structured exercises that focus on health-related and skill-related fitness components.
Nutrition and Diet 15 This refers to a well-balanced diet, especially nutrient and fluid intake, as well as having healthy digestion.
16 Alcohol and Drugs These substances can affect one’s mood and bodily processes, so one must abstain or consume less of them.
Medical Self-Care 17 This refers to how one addresses minor injuries, common illnesses, or the need for professional care.
18 Rest and Sleep Adequate rest and sleep are just as important as regular exercise.
19 Instructions Draw a fishbone diagram in your notebook. List the components of the definition of physical health. Define each component in your own words. After five minutes, exchange your notebook with your seatmates to check if you have common answers. Enlighten

23 In this lesson, we will learn about the components of health-related and skill-related fitness and their contribution to overall health and wellness. Enlighten
24 Health-Related Fitness Components These are the components of physical fitness that, when enhanced, lessen the risk of getting noncommunicable diseases.
Cardiovascular Endurance This refers to the capability to complete exercises for a period without stopping or taking a break. Jogging, dancing, swimming, and climbing stairs are some daily activities that help develop cardiovascular endurance. Muscular Strength This focuses on the muscles of the body and its ability to exert a certain amount of force. Weight lifting, heavy gardening, and any activity that requires the strength of your muscles help develop muscular strength. 25
Muscular Endurance Just like the muscular strength component, muscular endurance tests the condition of the muscles. It refers to the ability to do repetitive actions for a sustained period. Swimming, hiking, and cycling are exercises that can help improve your stamina. Flexibility This refers to the body’s ability to do a movement or a range of actions without resulting in injury. Doing various stretching and yoga positions are perfect ways to measure this component. 26
Body Composition 27 This component refers to the percentages of tissues, fat, muscles, bones, and organs that make up the body. This determines a person’s leanness since muscle tissues take up less space in the body than fat tissues. Enlighten
Skill-Related Fitness Components 28 This refers to the ability to manipulate our body effectively in order to do more complex movements necessary for daily activities and sports.
Agility This is the ability to change the body’s direction or position quickly. It is specifically required for sports like tennis and football in order to be in an advantageous position against opponents. Power This refers to the ability to apply maximum effort in a short period of time. Spiking a volleyball and kicking a football both require power. 29
Speed This is the ability to cover as much distance as possible in a short amount of time. Running a marathon, cycling, and swimming rely mainly on speed to gain an advantage against other competitors. Coordination This is a skill-related fitness component that refers to the ability to move two or more body parts at the same time. Sports that use the eyes, hands, and feet require this fitness component. Basketball and volleyball are examples of these. 30
Balance This refers to the ability to maintain an upright position or posture while standing still or moving. Balance is required in surfing and skating. Reaction Time This skill-related fitness component helps an individual to react quickly to stimuli. Karate, ping-pong, and tennis all require quick reaction time to gain an advantage. 31
32 Instructions Form 11 groups. Each group will be assigned a picture. Choose a representative for your group who will act out the physical activity in the picture. The other groups will guess the physical activity and its corresponding physical fitness component. The first group who gets the correct answer receives the point. Enlighten
