First Aid in Team Sports

DEFINITION TEAM SPORTS - Includes any sport which involves two or more players working together towards a shared objective

Team Sports help… Increase aerobic capacity and cardiovascular health. 2. Lower body fat and improve muscle tone. 3. Build strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Team Sports help… 4. Increase muscle and bone strength 5. Improve health due to shifts between walking, running, and sprinting 6. Prevent obesity, diabetes an other diseases

DEFINITION FIRST AID - a temporary and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury

DEFINITION FIRST AID -- It includes self-help and home care id medical assistance is not available or delayed. -R.I.C.E. stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate.

Common Injuries Encountered by Athletes

DEFINITION HEAT STROKE A life threatening condition which requires immediate medical attention. Common cause is exercising in hot climates especially those with high humidity and dehydration.

SYMPTOMS HEAT STROKE High body temperature High pulse rate High breathing rate Disorientation

SYMPTOMS HEAT STROKE Confusion/Irritation/Aggression Seizure Hypotension (low blood pressure) Unconsciousness/coma

TREATMENT HEAT STROKE 1. Notify the emergency service. 2. Place in cold bath water for 5-10 minutes, but should not be longer than 10 minutes. If cold bath is not possible, spraying with cold water or laying towels soaked in cold water all over the body could be an option.

DEFINITION HEAT EXHAUSION it occurs when a person has been exposed to a hot environment for an extended period of time

TREATMENT

DEFINITION CRAMPS A sudden and involuntary muscle contraction. Temporary and non-damaging, but can cause mild-to-excruciating pain, and a paralysis-like immobility of the affected muscle.

TREATMENT CRAMPS Stretching, massage, and drinking plenty of fluid, such as water can help in treating simple muscle cramp.

DEFINITION SPRAIN A stretched or torn ligament. (Ligament are tissues that connect bones at a joint.) Falling, twisting or getting hit can all cause a sprain.

SYMPTOMS SPRAIN Pain Swelling Bruising

TREATMENT SPRAIN

DEFINITION STRAIN A stretched or torn muscle or tendon. (Tendons are tissues that connect muscle to bone.)

SYMPTOMS STRAIN Pain Muscle spasms Swelling Trouble moving the muscle

DEFINITION KNEE INJURIES result from a blow or twist to the knee from improper landing after jump or from running too hard, too much or without proper warm up most common joint injury

DEFINITION FRACTURES a break in the bone that can occur from either a quick, one-time injury to the bone or from repeated stress to the bone over time

TREATMENT FRACTURES

DEFINITION DISLOCATIONS is when two bones that come together to form a joint become separated excessive stretching or falling, cause the majority or dislocations.
