INTRODUCTION Started in 2015 To make sure that vaccines remain effective with as little wastage as possible Opened, half used vials can be used again to withdraw a number of doses, if they are stored correctly Applicable only to OPV, Hepatitis B, Td, DPT, Pentavalent, IPV Not applicable to Measles, MR, BCG, Rotavirus vaccine, JE
CRITERIA Vaccine vials opened in one session site can be used for more than one immunization session for up to 4 weeks provided: Expiry date has not passed Vaccines are stored strictly under appropriate temperature range both during transportation & storage at cold chain point Vaccine vial septum has not submerged in water or contaminated in any way Aseptic technique has been used to withdraw all doses VVM has not reached discard point Ensure that each open vial has the recorded date and time of opening.
At the end of each session, all the open vials should be returned to the cold chain point There, the vials should be segregated into- Reusable –Pentavalent, DPT, OPV, IPV, Hep B, Td, TT Non- reusable- BCG, MR, RVV, JE Open vials of BCG, JE and MR should not be kept for more than 6 hours and should be destroyed after 48 hours or before the next session whichever is earlier. All vials should be transported in zipper bags in the vaccine carrier.
VACCINE VIAL MONITOR A Vaccine Vial Monitor is a thermochromic label placed on the vaccine vials which registers the cumulative effect of heat exposure over time. VVMs primarily serve to warn the healthcare worker when the heat exposure of the vial has exceeded a pre set limit beyond which the vaccine should not be used Also helps in deciding which vaccine vials should be used first (more exposed ones)
LOCATION OF VVM VVMs are located either on the label or on the top of the cap or on the neck of the ampoule depending on the type of vaccine (liquid or freeze-dried). VVM for freeze dried vaccines are placed either on top of the cap (vials) or on the neck of the ampoule so it is discarded by the time of reconstitution. VVM for liquid type vaccines are placed on custom labels to allow reference to VVM readings
