Peer Assessment: Unit 2 Skills Development for Live Performance
Comment on the following skills and attributes from rehearsals and workshops
Physical Skills
Olivia Bg (liv) is a wonderful dancer and
uses a wide range of physical skills. An
example of this is her weight placement.
During her solo liv performs a backspin, this
needs correct weight placement as it helps
to create balance and makes the spin more
stable. During rehearsals for her solo liv has
practiced this backspin and developed the
correct weight placement. Liv has also
developed her stamina; she has completed
this through completing full out rehearsals
of her solo, this has meant her stamina has
improved as her body is getting more used
to the choreography. Liv has furthermore
been working on her characterisation and
facial expressions. In the beginning she
struggled with this and wasn't entirely sure
how to portray her character to the
audience, she has improved with this and
continues to work hard on developing these
skills. We see this during her solo when she
interacts with the audience, she has
incorporated gestures, for example, a wink,
this further helps her portray her character
to the audience. To develop her skills in this
area further she took part in a class
workshop, in which she worked on her
characterisation and facial expressions. If I
had to pick a physical skill for Liv to
continue to develop it would be her stamina,
this is because when dancing her solo full
out she, towards the end of her dance,
loses her facial expressions; she is tired
from the dance, her stamina seems to run
low as her energy is being used up. Overall,
Liv is an amazing dancer and always works
hard on developing new skills.
Interpretive Skills
Liv has also portrayed a range of
interpretive skills throughout the rehearsal
process. For example, liv has often
reviewed the script and dances of the Mad
Hatters Tea Party. This includes watching
the scenes back and closely observing the
performers to learn from them and perfect
the movements and style of performance.
She understands the social and historical
context of the piece and has a strong
understanding of the practioner’s aims and
intentions. She has further developed her
knowledge on character relations, this also
helped her develop her understanding of
why the characters behave the way they do
and how they portray their relationships to
an audience. Liv is currently working on
improving her stylistic qualities and adapting
to Kate Prince’s Hip Hop styles, she is
doing this by continuously practicing her
solo in which there is a section of dance
which incorporates hip hop styled
movements. She is continuing to develop
her skills and practice. Liv not only
understands the context surrounding this
piece but also is able to use that knowledge
to choreograph movement that enhance the
story telling element of it. For example,
during rehearsals for her solo she
choreographed sequences of
dance/movement for the other characters.
This exemplified her knowledge of the piece
as the choreography fit with the style and
further helped portrayed the story to the
audience. If I had to pick something that liv
could further develop it would be her spatial
awareness and use of the space, during
rehearsals she has worked on this and
improved. During “funk it up” (a dance from
the show) she, whilst spinning, can
occasionally cut through the paths of other
dancers, Liv is continually working hard to
work on her spacing and has improved
massively.
Personal Management
Liv has continuously attended dance rehearsals/lesson on time and with the right kit. She
is always ready to work and often participates in group lead warmups as well as
sometimes leading warmups herself. Her attire is good - she is in dance wear with her hair
tied back. She is willing to try new dance styles and test out new things when
choreographing dances. She often pushes herself to learn new skills and tricks to
incorporate into her dance and is continuously looking to improve and develop. She listens
and responds accordingly to instructions and feedback. Liv is wonderful to be around, she
always offers to help other dancers when they need support, and she helps create a
comfortable and happy environment in the dance studio. She constantly supports others,
often encouraging them to try new things and develop new skills. She is concentrated and
focused during rehearsals and performances, always working hard and contributing to the
enthusiastic and pleasant atmosphere of the dance studio. Liv is a wonderful dancer, and
she often uses time outside of rehearsals and lessons to practice and experiment with new
movement and choreography, constantly trying to develop all her skills.
