About This Presentation

The pentose phosphate pathway is required to produce the 5 ribonucleotides, the NADPH for free radical excretion, and ribonucleotide for synthesizing the nucleosides and nucleotides.

INTODUCTION

HISTORY OF PENTOSE PHOSPHATE PATHWAY Sir Hans Adolf Krebs and Fritz Albert Lipmann

OVERVIEW Totally 10% if the glucose enters into pentose phosphate pathway Out of that 10% - (30%) of the pathway happens at the liver. i.e 100g 10g 3g This particular reaction takes place in the cytosol and particularly important in the tissues like adipose tissue, mammary gland & adrenal cortex The PPP is very low in the skeletal muscle The core set of this pathway is to oxidize glucose 6-phosphate to ribose 5-phosphate and generates NADPH as well as converting hexose into pentose The main product of this patheway is NADP and the ribose 5-phosphate.

REACTION Glucose 6-phosphate + 2NADP+ +H2O ribose 5- phosphate + 2NADPH +2H+ +CO2

STAGES There are three stages involved in this pathway Stage-1; (Oxidative reaction) Stage-2; Isomerization of ribulose 5-phosphate to ribose 5 – phosphate Stage-3; linking of the pentose phosphate pathway with the glycolysis Via transketolase & transaldolase (Non oxidative reaction)

STAGE-1(oxidative phase) H -

STAGE-2 (Isomerization phase) NON OXIDATIVE PHASE
