Topic Name: Seed Processing Course code: ACP 105 Prepared By: Camille C. Perez 3

Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, students should be able to; E xplain the processes involved in seed processing such as drying, cleaning, grading, packaging, and labeling. Develop appreciation for the importance of seed quality in ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture. D emonstrate the proper methods of seed handling, including drying and cleaning, to maintain viability and purity. 4

Seed Processing Seed processing means improving the quality of harvested seed, including several operations starting from harvesting of seed crop till its marketing 4

Objectives of Seed Processing To improve seed quality through removal of Di sease affected seed, non- seed material, broken seeds To maintain seed viability and vigour To increase real value of seed Real value = Purity (%) × Germination (%) 100 5

Methods used for Seed Processing Seed Drying Seed Cleaning Seed Grading Seed Packaging Seed Labeling 6

1. Seed Drying Reduction in seed moisture content to a safer limit is called seed D rying . Its objective is to maintain seed viabilit y and seed vigour for longer period of time during storage . If moisture contents are high, then higher chances of insect pests attack 7

Types of Seed Drying 1. Natural Drying Seeds are spread uniformly at neat and clean place and dry under natural conditions i.e under sun 2. Artificial Drying Different artificial driers are used to dry seeds Bag Dr yer Box Dr yer Bin Dr yer Continuous Flow Tower 8

2. Seed Cleaning Separation of physical impurities or removal of non seed material from seed Wet Cleaning Dry Cleaning 9

3. Seed Grading Removal of under sized / under weight seeds from seed lot Grading is done on the basis of Length Width Thickness Density of seed 10

4. Seed Packaging Seeds are packed in bags of appropriate quality and size. Choice of packing material depends upon type of crop, amount of seed and storage conditions Packaging materials are three types: Moisture- vapour resistance, e.g polythene Moisture- vapour permeable, e.g cloth, paper bags Moisture- vapour proof, e.g Tin cans 11

5. Seeds Labelling All seed bags must carry printed information about Crop Variety Class of seed Name & address of producer Physical purity (%) Genetic purity (%) Moisture (%) Germination (%) Date of germination Date of test Net Content 12 Seed Bag Label - Example Crop: Rice Variety: IR64 Class of seed: Certified Seed Name & Address of Producer: National Seeds Corporation , Philippines Physical purity: 98% Genetic purity: 99% Moisture: 10% Germination: 85% Date of germination test: 10 Aug 2025 Net Content: 10 kg
