“Perfect” comes from the Latin word perfectum which means “complete”.

“tense” it refers to the time of the action.

Therefore, “perfect tense” expresses action that is already completed.

Past Perfect tense - it expresses idea that something occurred before another action in the past and it can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past .

Past Perfect tense Positive Form: Subject + had +past participle of the verb Negative Form: Subject + had not +past participle of the verb Question Form: Had + subject +past participle of the verb

Example #1: - Before I knew it, she had r un out the door.   Example #2: - When I got home yesterday, my father had already cooked dinner.   Example #3: - It had already stopped raining when I bought an umbrella. (Completed action before something in the Past) When, Before, After, Already, as soon as and just .

Example #1: - When he graduated , he had been in London for six years.   Example #2: - By the time I left Ilocos Norte, I had been living in Burgos for 40 years.   Example #3: - Mrs. Paz had been teaching Mandarin for 50 years. Past perfect tense that talks about duration before something in the past. (Had been)

Example #1: I had eaten dinner so I wasn’t hungry. Example #2: - I did not have any money because I had left my wallet at home. Past perfect tense that explains or give reason. (because, so)

Present Perfect tense - it refers to the form of the verb used for actions or events that have been completed or have happened in a period of time up to the present .

Future Perfect tense Subject + will have + past participle of the main verb. - it refers to a verb form that expresses action completed by a specified time in the future .

Future Perfect tense Positive Form: Subject + will + have +past participle of the verb Negative Form: Subject + will not + have+ past participle of the verb Question Form: Will + subject + have+ past participle of the verb

-it refers to a completed action in the future. When we use this tense, we are projecting ourselves forward into the future and looking back at an action that will be completed some time later than now . Future Perfect Tense
