PERSONALITY The term ‘personality’ often appears in our day-to-day discussion. The literal meaning of personality is derived from the Latin word persona , the mask used by actors in the Roman theatre for changing their facial make-up. After putting on the mask, audience expected the person to perform a role in a particular manner. It did not, however, mean that the person enacting the given role necessarily possessed those qualities.
PERSONALITY It is the sum total of all physical, mental and emotional attitudes, values, interests and motivational factors. It is the totality of the person and not merely external looks, but character, behavioral traits and attitude towards life.
TYPES OF PERSONALITY BASED ON TEMPERAMENT THEORY Sanguine (Popular): described primarily as being highly talkative, enthusiastic, active, and social. Choleric (Powerful): tend to be more extroverted, independent, decisive, goal-oriented, and ambitious. Melancholic (perfect): tend to be analytical and detail-oriented, deep thinkers and feelers. Phlegmatic (Peaceful): tend to be relaxed, peaceful, quiet, and easy-going. Sympathetic and care about others, yet they try to hide their emotions.
Based on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) constructed by Kathrine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers is an introspective self-report questionnaire with the purpose of indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world around them and make decisions. It is based on the conceptual theory proposed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung .

FACTORS AFFECTING PERSONALITY BIOLOGICAL Heredity: determines a person’s temperament Brain influences the personality Physical stature also influence on the personality of an individual. FAMILY FACTORS Family, Social factors and environment created by parents at home are also important in shaping individual’s personality.
FACTORS AFFECTING PERSONALITY SITUATIONAL FACTORS Knowledge, skills, language, a situation acquired by a person can be termed as learned modifications of behavior and this determines a person’s action. Therefore, the situation may potentially have a very big impact on the actions and expressions of a person. CULTURAL FACTORS : Apart from the family background, social class also leaves an imprint on the personality of an individual.
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT Development of the organized pattern of behaviors and attitude that makes a person distinctive through the interaction of temperament, character, and environment.
IMPORTANCE OF PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT A very important thing we need to remember is that our personality, regardless of what it is now, can develop and evolve. Our personality will help will help us build strong personal relationships. Our personality will dictate success in our career. It helps us create a unique identity among thousands.
IMPORTANCE OF PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT IN NURSING Nurses, as people, are of decisive importance for the quality of care. Their personalities affect their character of nursing relationships and their behavior involves openness to the needs of others and treating patients as a whole, ( Brendz , 1995)

FOCUSING ON POSITIVE PERSONALITY TRAIT Find your confidence Be open to new experiences Be agreeable and friendly Be respectful and humble Have resilience
AVOIDING NEGATIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS Avoid rigidity and stubbornness Exercise patience rather than anger Help others more Speak up more Stop comparing yourself too much to others
BELIEVING IN ONESELF Remember that each person is unique Find Your inner happiness Focus on loving yourself
