Citing and referencing Essential skills for university and beyond

Why do you think referencing is so important?

Why cite and reference? To show where you got your ideas from To demonstrate your knowledge of published research. To develop an essential transferable skill that you will need to use in your future career when writing reports/proposals etc. To help avoid charges of plagiarism (copying the work of other people).

Plagiarism "The University defines plagiarism as the act of presenting the work of another person (or people) as one’s own without proper acknowledgement. This includes copying the work of another student or other students” (Kingston University London, 2021, p.5). Citations and references are like signposts. They direct your readers to the sources that you have used.

What is an in text citation?

When do we need to reference?

Reference every time you use someone else’s work. “You are expected to reference every time you use someone else’s work or ideas in your own work. There are no exceptions to this rule , and it applies to all your work, including assignments, essays, presentations, dissertations, and other research or publications” (Pears and Shields, 2019, p.1). Images must be referenced too! Figure 1. Driving games ( photo_steff , 2021) References Photo_steff (2021). Available at: https://pixabay.com/photos/console-video-game-leisure-6062167/ (Accessed: 14 October 2021).

Example of in text citation In recent years, the term fake news has become ubiquitous. While the practice of fabricating verifiably untrue stories is nothing new – certain sections of the tabloid press have a long history of engaging in such disreputable activity – the rapid expansion of the internet and social media means that disinformation, spin and outright lies can be created and disseminated on an unprecedented scale. As they have grown in popularity, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have become significant sources of news for a large number of people ( Hermida et al., 2012). Yet these platforms are not bound by the same notions of fact-checking and investigative rigour which have long been the guiding principles of print-based journalism. The role of an editorial team acting as mediators to information seems increasingly old-fashioned, and it is now the social media companies who act as the gatekeepers to knowledge in the new online environment (Bro and Wallberg , 2016).
