This thesis brings into consideration a long-forgotten part and fills the gap in the academic study of Islam and the intellectual history of Muslims in the subcontinent. It also highlights the genealogical roots of the Barelvi ideology that Barelvīsm has tremendously influenced the conception of religion during the last century and claims a huge following. Furthermore, it adds to the history of the Muslim struggle against the East India Company and the British government.

15 th June, 2020 Ph.D. Presentation Department of Islamic Studies, F/O Hum. & Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia Sep 16, 2022 Research Questions Ph.D. Viva-Voce Department of Islamic Studies, F/O Hum. & Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia March 20, 2023 Who were the Uthmanis ? How did they respond to the reformist/puritanical interpretations of Islam? What were the epistemological foundations of their polemics? Was the development of the Barelvi thought from Fazl -e-Rasul to Ahmad Raza linear in manner or were there some mutations during its progress? Why were the Uthmanis marginalized? What were their contributions to the Indian struggle and its freedom movement?

15 th June, 2020 Ph.D. Presentation Department of Islamic Studies, F/O Hum. & Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia Sep 16, 2022 Some Clarifications Ph.D. Viva-Voce Department of Islamic Studies, F/O Hum. & Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia March 20, 2023 Discussion on the modern intra-Muslim polemics may be found discomforting by some people because of its history. But I have tried to maintain objectivity in my study of the Uthmanis , and in my exploration of them as an intellectual tradition among many without attempting to give any value-judgment. Often in the thesis, I have used the term ‘Wahhabi’ for the ideological opponents of the Uthmanis following the usage of the term in the Uthmani polemics. But, to their opponents, it may seem derogatory. I do not intend to employ any such meaning which is offensive to anyone. On the usage of the term ‘devotional.’ First, I found this term in the works of Usha Sanyal on Barelvis. Its usage for the beliefs and practices challenged by Shah Ismail and his followers does not mean that they did not have devotion to Islam or other beliefs that they viewed as authentic. Rather, this term is used to denote the Sufi practices that developed in later years, especially among the masses, through which they demonstrate their devotion to the Prophet and Sufis.
