Phalanges of upper limb Prepared by- Sanju Sah St. Xavier’s college, Maitighar , Kathmandu Department of Microbiology

Fingers and thumbs contains 14 bones, called phalanges Both hands have 28 bones Mesodermal in origin N amed after the ancient Greek phalanx (a rectangular block of soldiers), plural form is phalanges Location Phalanges are digital bones in both the hands One end of each is attached to the palm of your hand, and the other end is free

Structure

Its structure is designed to support long digits of human body  The standard digital formula of a phalange is said to be 2+3+3+3+3 Digital formula started from thumb Each digits of finger have three phalanges except thumb Thumb has only two phalanges Phalanges of firs digit is smaller than other fingers

Each phalax has a base proximally, a shaft(body) and a head distally The proximal phalanges are the largest, the middle one is intermediate and the distal one is smallest. The shafts of the phalanges taper distially The terminal phalanges are flattened and expanded at their distal ends, which underlie the nail beds

These phalanges are connected with muscles of the palm and forearm Articulation An  inter- phalangeal joint is one of the articulations between adjacent phalanges of the digits

Function The phalanges support the basic framework of the digits  Majority of voluntary living functions are performed such as tool making, grasping things, or crafting things

Clinical significance Facture to phalanges leads to immobilization which is treated by Plaster of P aris bandage References Gray H: Anatomy of the Human Body.
