THEME?
“The theme of the
poem is its central
topic,subject or
message” (creative
writing news, 2020)
To find the theme of
a poem, we have to
break it down to
find what it is about.

MOOD
“Mood is the feeling the audience gets from the poem” (Hassan,2020)
It is the emotional response that the language, imagery, and themes evoke.
Moodscanvarywidelycreating feelings of joy, sorrow, nostalgia, anger, andtranquilityamongothers
Can be understood through the following questions:
“What isthemood ofthepoem?” (Hassan, 2020)
“Does the mood change over the course of the poem? Why did the author create the changes?” (Hassan.2020)

TONE
Tone-“the attitude the
writer has towards the
subject they are
writing about”
(Hassan,2020)
It is conveyed through
the word choices, the
style of writing, and
the use of literary
devices.
It can be formal,
informal, ironic,
sarcastic, playful,
serious, or any other
form of attitude.
Questions to be
asked:
Does the poet agree,
disagree, ridicule, or
condemn the subject
of the poem? Why?
How do the word
choices affect the
tone of the poem?

FIGURATIVE
LANGUAGEUSED?
“A poetic device is a deliberate use
of words, phrases, sounds, and
even shapes and convey meaning”
