Prefers educational problem in which it need propose theory to cover no more variables that can be rigidly controlled Interested in proximate or efficient causes of practice

philosophy Definition of terms: 4 > Ancient Greek word philia (lover) and Sophia (wisdom) > means love for knowledge or the passion for learning Philosophy of education is the branch of applied philosophy that investigates the nature of education as well as the its aim and problem.

Philosophy of science Philosophy looks at the big questions of life and knowledge, while science seeks to model the mysteries of the natural world. Metaphysics & Ontology is superior to biology and psychology Introduction 5

Why is philosophy of science important? The philosophy of science is important because it provides an overview of how science progresses. This type of metacognitive oversight can help to steer the course through history as scientists make conclusions and predictions about the natural world. Introduction 6

theory System of ideas intended to explain something. Scientifically acceptable general principle offered to explain phenomena It provides general rules, for that practical judgement is needed F inal worth is determined by their capacity to make accurate predictions and resist empirical testing. theory & practice

3 theory concern in education 1. ETHICS (Theory of Values) – values are important consideration which studies shall be included in the curriculum. theory & practice

3 theory concern in education 2. EPISTEMOLOGY (Theory of Knowledge) - the nature of knowledge will not only have an influence on the way in which the curriculum is organized and taught, but it will also undergird the conception of truth and freedom with which it is taught. theory & practice

3 theory concern in education 3. METAPHYSICS (General Theory of Reality) - consider the nature of human as well as the world in which it abides. theory & practice

practice Refers to the activities whose aim is the achievement of scientific goals. e.g. Discovering, experimenting, measuring, modeling, observing, predicting, stimulating and so on. There has been a shift in Philosophy of Science from an emphasis of scientific theories to an emphasis on actual scientific practices. theory & practice

Categories of educational philosophy Presentation title 12 PHILOSOPHY is the love of wisdom or learning PHILOSOPHY is also the MOTHER as well as the QUEEN of science NATURAL PHILOSOPHY – chemistry & physics MENTAL PHILOSOPHY – psychology MORAL PHILOSOPHY- science of politics, economics & sociology

PRAGMATISM What is experienced and observed is true Synonymous to Functionality & Practicality Thought must produce actions rather that continue lying inside the mind ON EDUCATION Involves student work in groups Method of teaching includes experimentation, project making and problem solving Stresses on the application of what have learned rather than the transfer of the organized body of knowledge 13

reconstructionism Philosophy aims to awake the consciousness of individual about the social issues, concerns and problems that confront him. ON EDUCATION Schools should originate policies and progress that will bring social reforms and orders Teachers should be an instrument to encourage the lead students in the program of social reform 14

SUMMARY Presentation title 15 Science cannot do without philosophy as there are philosophical stances implicit in the presuppositions and goals of any scientific paradigm and in how theories are connected to reality. Science needs philosophy to scrutinize those terms, presuppositions and goals.
