What is Phonetics?
The word “ Phone” means sound and
“tics” means scientific or systematic study
of something. So we can say that Phonetics
means scientific or systematic study of
human speech sounds.
Phoneticsis general study of all human
speech sounds and how they are produced,
transmitted and received.
Branches of Phonetics?
The study of phonetics can be divided into
three main branches (types):
1.Articulatory Phonetics (How sounds
are produced?)
2.Auditory Phonetics (How sounds are
received?)
3.Acoustic Phonetics (How sounds are
transmitted?)
1. Articulatory
Phonetics:
It is concerned with the
positions and movements
of the lips, tongue, and
other speech organs in
producing speech. It tells
how various speech sounds
are articulated.
Branches of Phonetics?
2. Auditory
Phonetics:
Auditory Phonetics is the
study of hearing and the
perception of speech
sounds. Impact of sound on
the brain of the listener. For
example: the transmission
of sound from ears to brain.
Branches of Phonetics?
3. Acoustic
Phonetics:
This branch of phonetics is
concerned with the
properties of sound waves.
It studies the physical
properties of speech sounds
as transmitted between the
mouth and ear.
Branches of Phonetics?
What is Phonology?
Phonology is the branch of linguistics
which investigates the ways in which speech
sounds are used systematically to form
words and utterances.
Phonology is the study of the sound
system of particulars human languages,
include dialects and other language varieties.
Branches of Phonology?
The study of phonology can be divided
into two main branches (types):
1.Segmental Phonology (Segments of
sounds?)
2.Suprasegmental Phonology (Features
of sounds?)
1.Segmental Phonology -Studies the way
speech can be analyzed into discrete
units, or segments, that constitute the
basis of the sound system.
Branches of Phonology?
1.Suprasegmental Phonology -Is
concerned with features of pronunciation
or production of sound. Including stress,
tone, rhythm and intonation (rise and fall
of voice in speaking).
Branches of Phonology?
Phonetics:
Phonetics deals with
production, transmission
and reception of all human
speech sounds in general
with no particular reference
to any one language.
Phonology:
Phonology deals with the
ways those sounds are
organized in a particular
language. It is subcategory
of phonetics.

Phonetics& Phonology
If we talk about by word definition it
comes from theGreek worddiphthongs,
means having two sounds.
Sounds formed by the combination of two
vowels in a single syllable, in which the
sound begins as one vowel and moves
towards another.
What is Diphthong?
What is Diphthong?
When we
move from
onevowel
soundto another,
such as the “oi”
in “oil” it's
called Gliding.
In RP and GA vowel sounds the
articulators remain more or less in the same
position throughout the articulation of the
vowel.
This means that the vowel quality (the
acoustic effect created during the
articulation of the vowel) remains more or
less constant.
What is Monophthong?
What is Monophthong?
Forexample:
when you say
"teeth", then
while you are
creating the
sound of the
"ee", nothing
changes for that
sound.
