PHRASE •A phrase is group of words (within a sentence) without both subject and verb. •A phrase functions as noun , verb , prepositional , appositive , infinitive and adjective.

noun phrase A noun phrase consists of a noun and other related words (usually modifiers and determiners) which modify noun. It functions like noun in a sentence. DETERMINERS A AN THE

•A verb phrase is a combination of main verb and its auxiliaries (helping verbs) in a sentence. VERB PHRASE Example: 1.He is eating an apple. 2.She has finished her work. AUXILIARIES am, is, are, was, were, will, have, has, had, may, might, can, could, shall, should, must

APPOSITIVE PHRASE Examples: 1.My uncle, a doctor in California, is moving to New Jersey. 2.The insect, a large cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen table. 3.Mr. Harrison, the principal in our school, wears a tie everyday. •Is a phrase with modifiers that describes, renames or explains the noun or pronoun beside it. It is separated from the rest of the sentence with a commas.

INFINITIVE PHRASE •An infinitive phrase is a group of words that uses an infinitive (“to” + verb). An infinitive is a verbal (a word that expresses action); so, an infinitive phrase has the same role of expressing action in a sentence. Examples: I told the dog to run home quickly. 2. I want to eat pizza for dinner.

ADJECTIVE PHRASE •An adjective phrase is a group of words that describes a noun/pronoun in a sentence that what kind and which one the noun/pronoun is. It consists of an adjective plus any modifier (adverb). Examples: 1.The black and white box was the pride of her collection. 2.Give me two very good reason why not!
