Introduction
Term smart can be defined as "smart"-is their ability to adapt to changing
conditions. "smart or intelligent materials are materials that have respond to
stimuli and environmental changes and to activate their functions according to
these changes. The stimuli like temperature, pressure, electricflow, magneticflow
,mechanical stress etc could originate internally or externaly.
Piezoelectric sensor is also a kind of smart material which
posses the both sensor and actuator characterisctics used in concrete structure
for the structural health monitoring of concrete structure.
Cont..
•Piezoelectric material have the ability to generate an electrical
potential in response to applied mechanical stress.

Historical development of piezoelectric material
ThewordPiezoelectricisderivedfromtheGreekword“piezo”whichmeansto
squeezeorpress.Thephenomenaofpiezoelectricitywasdiscoveredin1880by
PiereecurieandPaulJacquescurie.
Formsofpiezoelectricmaterial:-
Quartz(SiO2)
LithiumNiobate(LiNbO3)
LeadZirconateTitanatePZT([Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3)]
PLZT[(Pb1-xLax)(Zr1-yTiy)O3)]
Installation of piezoelectric material in concrete
structure
For the assesmentof active response of the structure the piezoelectric material
can be installed in two ways :-
Surface Bonded
:-Bonded to the surface of concrete through a high strength epoxy
adhesive .
Drawback material rapidly deteriorate with respect to atmospheric
weather condition.
Role of piezoelectric material in civil
infrastructure

Properties of piezoelectric material :-
Size :- ( 10*10*0.2) mm avilable commercial
Thickness:- 0.1 to 0.3 mm
Width :- 5 to 10 mm wide
Frequency range :- 20 -400 KHZ
Sensingzone:- 0.4to2meter
Density:- 7650kg/m3
Mechanicallossfactor:-0.001
Advantages of piezoelectric in civil engineering
:-
favorableforautonomousstructurehealthmonitoring
BroadFrequencyrange.
Costeffective
Smallsize&negligibleweight
Implementedatanytime.
Limitation of piezoelectric materials:-
PZT patch is relatively small sensing zone range from 0.4 to
2m only.
In large structure monitor a large number of PZT patch
increases the cost effect .
Data collection and data processing is very complex.
Skill person required for data handling.
FUTURE SCOPE
Useful in post earthquake damage detection.
Future scope in aircraft , satellites and civil infrastructures for
damage detection.
Implementation in advance damage detection methodology
