Acknowledgement
We will like to acknowledge Dr. Jacob T Varghese for providing us the opportunity to take
this project and guide us throughout our project. We will also like to acknowledge Dassault
systems without which the project would not have been possible . We also want to thank the
lab in-charges of Machine Drawing lab for helping us use the computers.

Abstract
A pipe vice is a pipe holding device which is used to cut pipes in industries. In this project
we will be doing the part modelling and the assembly of this device using solid works
software. Solid works is a software used to create part modelling 3d and 2d drawings of most
machine components.

Components
Base:
The base is made of ductile cast iron. These are the type of cast irons that contain spheres of
graphite. They are extremely strong hence it is virtually guaranteed against breakage. Below
are the 2D and 3D models

Handle Screw:

Movable Jaw:
As the jaws are the key clamping components of both types of pipe vice, it is vital that they
are made from a material that can withstand significant amounts of pressure, hence they
are made of the heat treated steel
Below are the 2D and #d figures

Bill of Materials:

Pipe Vice

A pipe vice is a plumbing tool used to hold pipe or tubing securely so that it can be cut or
threaded.
Pipe vices are also useful for pipe welding. In a manufacturing environment, a pipe vice is a
critical piece of apparatus in the assembly of pipeline components.
There are two types of pipe vice: chain pipe vices and hinged pipe vices.
Pipe Vice is made of ductile cast iron, heat treated steel and sometimes high tempered steel

.

Conclusion

We successfully modelled and assembled the parts of the pipe vice using the model and
assembly drawings from grabCAD website, in CAD software SolidWorks 2016 and rendered
a life like image of pipe vice assembly using PhotoView 360 addin in SolidWorks 2016.We
also tried to simulate the motion of pipe vice.
