PLANT PROPOGATION MEDIA BY: YUVARAJ S UHS18UG4252
DEFINITION: Propagation media is a basic need in which rooting of cuttings or germination of seeds takes place.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MEDIA: It should have capacity to hold seedlings firmly. The pH should be 5.5-6.5 It should have porous for aeration & drainage. It should cheap and easily available.
It should retain moisture. Free from weed seeds & pathogens. The volume of medium should constant upon wetting & drying. Provide adequate supply of nutrients.
SOIL It is mixture of mineral (45%),organic(5%) &water 25% .Air 25%. Sandy loamy soil is best suited for propagation with 40% sand,40% silt and 20%clay. pH 6 - 6.5
SAND Size of particles 0.05-2mm. It does not have any nutrients. Highly porous Drainage is easy Its weight is too high Used in combination.
VERMICULITE The mostly used grades are 2-3 mm and 0.75-1mm particle sized vermiculite.(5-8mm&1-2mm) It is micasious mineral Absorbs high quantity of water.
PEAT MOSS * mostly used in USA *pH Is 3.2 -4.5 *partially decomposed parts of aquatic plants and mosses. *high water holding capacity
SPHAGNUM MOSS *found hilly and dampy areas *obtained from Sphagnum papillosoma Residues *light weight * High water holding capacity
PUMICE This Contains SiO 2 , Al-oxides , and less of Fe,Mg,Ca,Na.. Increases aeration and drainage in the medium.. Used either alone or in combination….
PERLITE White silecaceous matter of volcanic origin. Particle size 1.3-3mm.. pH is 6-8. good ion exchange capacity.. Good water holding capacity…
LEAF MOULD Leaves are decomposed to make this type of media.. Leaves are mixed with FYM for early decomposition. Rich in N , P , K…..
COMPOST It is decomposed matter of organic wastes(fruits ,leaves , vegetables , etc…)… Rich in nutrients….
PLASTIC AGGREGATES Polysterene fractions with urea foam. More N & high water holding capacity
cocopeat / cocodust Most widely used media.. Byproduct of coconut… High pore space and retention capacity…. Complete nutrients are obtained…..
ROCK WOOL It is fibers of basalt rock formed at 1600 celsius. High water holding capacity. Retain good level of oxygen.
CALCINED CLAY It is mineral like clay aggregates formed at high temp.. Highly porous and does not absorb water. It is mainly mixed with growing media.
CHARCOAL It is added/mixed with soil to increase pH and absorption of water in the soil. It draws the toxins from the soil. Improves drainage.
SAW DUST / WOOD SHARINGS This is the byproduct of saw mill. It has high water retention capacity. Less in weight High porosity
