Filtration

Slide Content

Plate & Frame filter Made by Kashish Wilson Assistant Professor, MM College of Pharmacy,MM (DU) Mullana

Introduction The plate and frame design utilizes a flat, solid plate (known as a “flush plate”) covered by a filter press cloth, with a hollow frame between each plate. A metal skeleton holds and clamps the filter plates together to create a chamber, which is formed by the flush plate on each side of a frame.

Principle The working principle of filter presses is that slurry is pumped into the machine such that solids are distributed evenly during the fill cycle. Solids build up on the filter cloth, forming the filter cake; the filtrate exits the filter plates through the corner ports into the manifold, yielding clean filtered water.

Working....

Uses As a mature solid-liquid separation equipment, plate and frame filter press is widely used for mining, metallurgy, petroleum, chemical, medicine, textile, printing, paper making, food, alcohol, inorganic salt, coal washing, dyeing and sewage treatment industries. A filter press is a piece of equipment used in liquid/solid separation. Specifically, the filter press separates the liquids and solids using pressure filtration, wherein a slurry is pumped into the filter press and is dewatered under pressure.

Merits & Demerits Merits:- The advantages of the plate and frame filter press are: simple structure, easy operation, stable operation and convenient maintenance; flexible selection of filter area, small footprint; strong adaptability to materials, suitable for various small and medium-sized sludge dewatering treatment. Demerits:-Consequently, filter presses have long been used for a wider range of applications than any other type of filter. However, disadvantages of the filter press include intermittent operation and high labour requirements. Therefore filter presses might be regarded as inferior to continuous, vacuum filters.
