EARTH’S INTERIOR AND PLATE TECTONICS

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that explains how landforms are created from the movement of the Earth. The earth's crust is broken into Seven large plates and into several smaller plates. WHAT IS PLATE TECTONICS?

These plate locations give us an insight into other patterns. The locations of mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, ocean floor structures, earthquakes and volcanos all occur in patterns. WHY DOES IT MATTER?

On the other hand, major mountain ranges are often formed inside continents or near their edge. MOUNTAIN RANGES

Tectonic plates can move in different directions resulting in different outcomes. TECTONIC PLATES Convergent Faults Divergent Faults Transform Faults

Convergent boundaries occur when plates collide with each other. Volcanos and Earthquakes commonly occur along convergent boundaries. CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES

DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES Divergent boundaries occur when plates move away from on another. When they move apart, water or magma fills the space and creates new land.

TRANSFORM FAULT BOUNDARIES Transform boundaries are also know as sliding boundaries. They occur when plates slide creating a break in the earth's surface. This can create a cliff and often causes earthquakes along faults.

By understanding more about plate tectonics we can have a better understanding of the patterns that occur on Earth. WHY DOES IT MATTER?
