SCIENTIST BORN IN 1856 WHO
DISCOVERED THE ELECTRON,
CHANGING OUR VIEW OF ATOMS. HE
PROPOSED THE PLUM PUDDING
MODEL IN 1897, WON THE NOBEL
PRIZE IN 1906, AND TAUGHT MANY
STUDENTS. HE DIED IN 1940.

THE FIRST DIRECT EVIDENCE OF
ATOMS COMES FROM ROBERT
BROWN, A SCOTTISH BOTANIST. IN
1827, HE SAW TINY POLLEN GRAINS
MOVING RANDOMLY IN WATER. THIS
MOVEMENT, CALLED BROWNIAN
MOTION, CAN BE OBSERVED IN ANY
SMALL PARTICLES IN A LIQUID.

BITS OF FRUIT IN IT.
1. **POSITIVE BASE**: THE PUDDING IS POSITIVELY CHARGED AND HOLDS
EVERYTHING TOGETHER.
2. **ELECTRONS AS PLUMS**: THE BITS OF FRUIT ARE THE NEGATIVELY
CHARGED ELECTRONS, SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE PUDDING.
3. **BALANCE**: THE POSITIVE CHARGE BALANCES OUT THE NEGATIVE
CHARGE OF THE ELECTRONS, MAKING THE ATOM NEUTRAL OVERALL.
THIS IDEA WAS IMPORTANT FOR SHOWING THAT ATOMS HAVE SMALLER
PARTS, BUT LATER SCIENTISTS FOUND THAT ATOMS ARE MORE COMPLEX
THAN THIS MODEL SUGGESTS.
