DEFINITION: Pneumothorax is
the presence of air in the pleural
space, causing partial or complete

collapse of the lung.

TYPES: >?

- SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX: Occurs without any obvious cause. da

- PRIMARY SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX: Happens in healt
the rupture of small air blisters (blebs).

- SECONDARY SPONTANEOUS PNEUMOTHORAX: Occurs in people with underlyi:

diseases.

- TRAUMATIC PNEUMOTHORAX: Results from injury to the chest or lung.

- TENSION PNEUMOTHORAX: A severe form where air enters the pleural sp:

escape, leading to increased pressure and potentially life-threatening complications.

SYMPTOMS:

- Sudden chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Rapid heart rate

- Cough

- Fatigue

DIAGNOSIS:

- Physical examination
- Chest X-ray

- CT scan

- Ultrasound

a

TREATMENT:

- Observation (for small, asymptomatic pne mo
- Needle aspiration or chest tube insertion (f
symptomatic pneumothorax)
= Surgery (for recurrent or persistent pneumothorax

- Supplemental oxygen

BREATHING EXERCISES: 3
h. 0

- Diaphragmatic breathing to promote lung re-expansion and
improve ventilation.

- Pursed-lip breathing to reduce breathlessness.

POSTURAL DRAINAGE:
- Positions to facilitate the drainage of secretions fra 1

lung segments, if necessary.

MOBILIZATION AND EXERCISE:
- Early mobilization to prevent deconditioning and impr

overall lung function.

- Graded exercise programs to enhance physical rance
and strength.

CHEST PHYSIOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES:

- Percussion and vibration to help clear secretions (i

secretions to be managed).

EDUCATION: à
- Teaching the patient about proper breathing techniques and

posture.

- Guidance on activity levels and avoiding activit

es at could
exacerbate the condition. a e

PAIN MANAGEMENT:

- Techniques to manage chest pain, such as u f

for support during coughing and breathing €

MONITORING:

- Regular follow-up to monitor lung function and prog

in recovery.

PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES:

- Encouraging smoking cessation and avoidance Pp

activities in susceptible individuals. ag
- Strengthening respiratory muscles to reduce thesrisk of \|
recurrence. a N

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery and

rehabilitation of patients with pneumothorax, helping,to improve

lung function, manage symptoms, and prevent complicatio, A
