EQUATION OF THE LINE USING POINT-SLOPE FORM
Jessebel G. Bautista Antonio J. Villegas Voc’l High School My Profile
OBJECTIVES: f ind the slope use point-slope form substitute the given values find the equation of a line
Mathematical Concepts: The Point-Slope Form given a slope and a point of a line, we may find the equation by substituting their respective values in the point-slope form. y - y 1 = m (x - x 1 )
EXAMPLE 1 Solution : Let x 1 = -2 y 1 = 3 m = 4 Given the slope and point. Use the point-slope form Find the equation of a line with slope of 4 and passing through the point (-2, 3 ). Express the equation in the slope-intercept form. y - 3 = 4(x - (-2)) y - 3 = 4(x + 2) y - 3 = 4x + 8 y = 4x + 11 y - y 1 = m (x - x 1 )
EXAMPLE 2 Solution : Let x 1 = 4 y 1 = 5 m = - Given the slope and a point . Use the point-slope form Find the equation of a line passing through the point (4, 5) with the slope of - Express the equation in the slope-intercept form. y - 5 = - (x - 4) y - 5 = - x + 2 y = - x + 7 y - y 1 = m (x - x 1 )
EXAMPLE 3 Solution: Let x 1 = 3 y 1 = -3 m = -5 Given the slope and a point . Use the point-slope form Find the equation of a line passing through the point (3 , -3) with the slope of – 5. Express the equation in the slope-intercept form. y - - 3 = -5(x - 3 ) y + 3 = -5x + 15 y = -5x + 12 y - y 1 = m (x - x 1 )
TO DO … m = 7 ; (2,2) m = -4; (3,4) m = 1; (-1,6) m = -5; (3, -3) m = 3; (7,1) 6. m = -1; (-4, -5) 7. m = 8; (-3,0) 8. m = 10; (6,6) 9. m = ; (8, -2) 10. m = ; (-6, -3) Write in the slope – intercept form of the equation of a line that has a slope m and that passes through the given point.
